Jorginho: Chelsea Star Accuses Chappell Roan’s Security of Upsetting Daughter
SÃO PAULO, Brazil – The intersection of the sporting and entertainment worlds produced an unexpected clash this weekend, as Flamengo midfielder Jorginho publicly accused pop singer Chappell Roan’s security team of aggressive behavior towards his 11-year-old daughter. The incident, which allegedly occurred during breakfast at a hotel in São Paulo, Brazil, has ignited a social media firestorm and prompted a response from Roan herself.
Jorginho, a 34-year-old Italy international with a distinguished career that includes Champions League and Europa League titles with Chelsea, detailed the incident in a lengthy Instagram post on Saturday. He explained that his daughter, a fan of Roan, had created a sign in anticipation of the singer’s headlining performance at the Lollapalooza music festival in São Paulo. Upon recognizing Roan at the hotel breakfast buffet, his daughter reportedly walked past her table, smiled, and returned to her seat without initiating a conversation.
According to Jorginho, a security guard then approached their table and began speaking “in an extremely aggressive manner” to both his wife, Catherine Harding, and his daughter, alleging that she was “disrespecting” or “harassing” Roan. He further claimed the guard threatened to file a complaint with the hotel while his daughter was visibly upset. “My daughter was extremely shaken and cried a lot,” Jorginho wrote.
The former Arsenal player, who has played 57 times for Italy and was part of the Euro 2020 winning squad, acknowledged the pressures of public life but argued that the security guard’s reaction was disproportionate. “I understand very well what respect and boundaries are. What happened there was not that. It was just a child admiring someone,” he stated. He concluded his post with a pointed message to Roan: “WITHOUT YOUR FANS, YOU WOULD BE NOTHING. AND TO THE FANS, SHE DOES NOT DESERVE YOUR AFFECTION.”
Roan responded to the allegations on Sunday, posting a video on her Instagram story expressing sadness for the mother and child, stating they “did not deserve that.” However, she clarified that she was unaware of the incident and that it did not involve her “own personal security.”
“I didn’t even see a woman and child – no-one came up to me, no-one bothered me,” Roan explained. “I was just sitting at breakfast in my hotel…I did not ask the security guard to go up and talk to this mother and child. They did not come up to me. They weren’t doing anything. It’s unfair for security to just assume someone doesn’t have great intentions when they have no reason to believe [that] due to the fact that there is no action even taken.” She emphatically denied any animosity towards fans or children, calling the suggestion “crazy.”
The incident has sparked a wide range of reactions online. Some social media users have expressed support for Jorginho and his family, while others have referenced Roan’s previous comments regarding fans’ behavior, which she has described as “creepy” and “stalker-like.” The Guardian reported on these comments in August 2024.
The fallout has even extended into the political sphere. Rio de Janeiro’s mayor, Eduardo Cavaliere, announced his intention to ban Roan from performing in his city, while simultaneously inviting Jorginho’s daughter to be a guest of honor at the city’s Todo Mundo music festival in May.
This “unexpected beef,” as some commentators have termed it, highlights the complexities of navigating public spaces and fan interactions for high-profile individuals. While Roan maintains she was unaware of the situation and did not direct her security team’s actions, the incident raises questions about the appropriate level of security intervention and the importance of considering the perspective of young fans. The situation underscores the delicate balance between ensuring an artist’s safety and fostering a positive relationship with their supporters.
Jorginho’s statement reflects a broader concern about the treatment of fans, particularly children, by security personnel. He emphasized the vital role fans play in an artist’s success, stating, “It’s sad to see this kind of treatment coming from those who should understand the importance of fans. At the end of the day, they are the ones who build all of this.”
