Junior Mapuku on Levski, Beroe & Bulgarian Football: Exclusive Interview

Former Beore and Levski striker Junior Mapuku recently shared his thoughts on his former clubs in an interview with the “Domat na Futbola” program. The Congolese forward discussed his life in France, his time in Bulgaria, and the current situations surrounding Beore and Levski.

Mapuku predicted that Levski will win the league title and that Beore will successfully avoid relegation. He currently resides in Paris, continuing to play football, albeit at a lower level, in the fourth division. He explained his decision to sign with a Parisian club was motivated by a desire to be closer to his son. “Every parent wants their child to surpass their achievements,” he said. “He’s a striker, just like me. I want him to be a good person.”

The former forward expressed his fondness for Bulgaria and its culture, recalling his time there as a positive experience. “I really like Bulgaria. The people remind me of Bulgaria, their character – they are very welcoming and kind,” he stated. He noted that he still receives messages from Beore fans on social media, expressing his continued affection for the club. “Beore gave me the opportunity to play football and develop. I met Petar Hubchev there – the man who gave me the most in football. I will always be grateful.”

Mapuku emphasized the importance of a strong coaching staff and management in football, highlighting the need for everyone to perform effectively. He believes that players and fans must maintain faith and perseverance. “Beore is a big club and everyone must fight for its survival,” he added.

He also touched upon the challenges of managing a team with many foreign players, stressing the importance of the coach’s role in fostering team cohesion and psychological well-being. He recalled his time at Beore, where he was one of five foreign players, and the crucial role Petar Hubchev played in integrating the team.

Mapuku voiced his disapproval of Beore’s sale of Alberto Salido, considering it a significant mistake. He believes Salido is a reliable player who consistently contributes to the team’s performance. “The whole team knows they can count on him. The striker works to score in every match. I think the club made a mistake,” he commented.

He revealed that he had previously expressed interest in returning to Beore, even discussing the possibility with the sporting director. However, he received no response from the club, and the opportunity ultimately fell through. “My time in football is coming to an end, and they need to discover new players,” he acknowledged.

Looking ahead to a potential match between Beore and Levski, Mapuku anticipates a demanding contest. He acknowledged Levski’s strong form and their pursuit of the championship, while urging Beore to fight until the very end. “It won’t be effortless for Beore because Levski is a very strong team right now and playing well. Beore must not give up and fight to the end. Levski wants to win because they are chasing the title. I expect a tough match. Both teams will be looking for the win and it’s hard to say who will win. Let the better team win,” he said.

Mapuku is predicting a championship victory for Levski. He praised their dedication, strong performance, and team spirit, highlighting key players like Carlos Ohene and Georgi Kostadinov. He also credited the club’s management, particularly Daniel Borimirov, for his intelligence and understanding of the game. He emphasized the significant impact of Levski’s passionate fanbase, describing them as the “12th player” on the field.

While he hasn’t personally met Sangare, Mapuku has observed his performances and believes he possesses the qualities to become a top player in Bulgaria. He acknowledged that Sangare’s injury is a setback for Levski but expressed confidence in the team’s ability to overcome it.

Mapuku stressed the importance of a quick adaptation period for any new striker joining Levski, given the limited number of remaining matches. He urged all players to maintain maximum focus and reiterated his prediction of a Levski championship and Beore’s survival in the First League. “In Stara Zagora, This represents a big club and It’s good to be part of the elite,” he stated.

Concluding the interview, Mapuku expressed his intention to attend a Levski match and jokingly suggested it might be the one where they lift the championship trophy. “I promised Carlos Ohene that I would reach and watch a Levski match. Why shouldn’t that be the one where the team lifts the title?” he finished.
