Juraj Slafkovský: Taking Control & Leading the Canadiens to Victory | NHL News
Juraj Slafkovsky is rapidly establishing himself as a key player for the Montreal Canadiens, demonstrating a growing ability to capture control of games and deliver when his team needs it most. His performance in a recent 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings underscored this evolution, contributing two goals and an assist, prompting repeated questions from the media about his increasing command of the game.
“Wow. So many questions about controlling the game,” Slafkovsky responded with a laugh after Monday’s practice, as reported by colleagues. “Everyone wanted to control the game and everyone wants to be the guy who takes it on themselves. I’m happy that I was able to be that guy. However, we have a lot of good players and tomorrow it could be someone else again. We desire to win as a team. If I can facilitate the team like that, of course I want to do it in every game.”
The 21-year-old Slovak winger has accumulated six points in his last three games, showcasing a consistent offensive output. He credits his approach to simply playing his best. “I’m trying to do the best I can,” he told Canadian media, elaborating on his goal against the Kings, where he skillfully created space from the boards and drove towards the net, a move reminiscent of Jaromír Jágr’s puck protection skills. “I didn’t see anyone open, but I saw space, so I decided to go to the middle and attempt to shoot. I’m grateful that it ended up in the goal.”
Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis highlighted Slafkovsky’s ability to recognize and capitalize on opportunities. “He has his offensive moments that he can apply to his advantage. Players like him are ready for those moments. They don’t know when they’re coming, but they always hope they appear. Hoping for opportunities and creating them are two different things, though. Juraj is actively creating his chances.”
Slafkovsky’s ascent hasn’t been without its challenges. He acknowledged a period of adjustment following his return from the 2022 Winter Olympics, where he was named most valuable player and led the tournament in scoring. “It was quick. In the first few games, I felt a little off and was trying to get back to my game,” he explained. “I was trying to play my best game, but it wasn’t as good as I wanted. But then it improved and hopefully it will just keep getting better, and better.”
A key factor in Slafkovsky’s recent success has been his placement on the first line alongside Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield. He emphasized that his chemistry with his linemates isn’t unique. “I want to play the same way with anyone else on this team,” Slafkovsky stated. “I want to be the best version of myself and then I can help others and they can likewise help me. That’s how we help the team win games.”
Slafkovsky recognizes his growing role as a leader within the Canadiens organization, but stresses the importance of attention to detail. “It starts with playing the right way, making smart decisions with the puck, and then good movement, opening up space, and continuing to create plays. It’s effortless to say, harder to do, but I consider I can do it,” he added.
With 52 points in 62 games, Slafkovsky has already established a new career high. He is the first Canadiens player to record three 50-point seasons before turning 22, a testament to his rapid development and consistent performance. This milestone adds to his impressive trajectory, solidifying his position as a rising star in the NHL.
The Canadiens will face a tough test on night when they host the Toronto Maple Leafs in the final matchup of the season between the two rivals. Montreal has won two of the three previous encounters this season, adding extra significance to this upcoming contest.
Slafkovsky’s journey from Olympic standout to emerging NHL leader is a compelling narrative. His ability to not only produce offensively but also to recognize and seize pivotal moments in games suggests a player poised for continued success and a central role in the Canadiens’ future.
