Kane Scores as Bayern Munich Extend Bundesliga Lead – Results from Across Europe

Kane Scores as Bayern Munich Extend Bundesliga Lead – Results from Across Europe

March 22, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Harry Kane continues to rewrite the Bundesliga record books, scoring in Bayern Munich’s dominant 4-0 victory over Union Berlin on Saturday to move within striking distance of Robert Lewandowski’s single-season goal tally. The England captain’s 31st league goal of the campaign puts him just 10 behind Lewandowski’s benchmark of 41, set during the 2020-21 season.

Bayern’s win, secured with goals from Michael Olise, a brace from Serge Gnabry, and Kane, extends their lead at the top of the Bundesliga to 12 points over Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund themselves secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Hamburg, needing a late comeback – scoring three goals in the final 17 minutes – to claim all three points. Rami Bensebaini scored twice, with Serhou Guirassy adding another for Dortmund.

The pursuit of Lewandowski’s record has become a defining narrative of Kane’s debut season in Germany. Brought in to fill the void left by the Polish striker’s move to Barcelona, Kane has not only matched Lewandowski’s goalscoring prowess but, as Manuel Neuer recently pointed out, has brought a more rounded skillset to the Bayern attack. Neuer, speaking after a previous victory, acknowledged Kane’s “extraordinary” contribution, stating he is “just as fine” as his predecessor.

Kane’s impact is further highlighted by the fact he reached 100 goals for Bayern in just 104 games, surpassing the previous records held by Cristiano Ronaldo and Erling Haaland. This blistering pace has fueled speculation about whether he can surpass Lewandowski’s record, a feat that now appears increasingly possible with seven league games remaining.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Cologne and Borussia Monchengladbach played out a 3-3 draw, while Heidenheim and Bayer Leverkusen shared six goals in a thrilling encounter. Werder Bremen secured a 1-0 away win against a 10-man Wolfsburg side.

Turning to Ligue 1, Paris Saint-Germain reclaimed the top spot with a commanding 4-0 victory over 10-man Nice. Nuno Mendes and Desire Doue place PSG in control before Youssouf Ndayishimiye’s sending-off effectively sealed Nice’s fate. Dro Fernandez scored his first goal for PSG since joining from Barcelona, and Warren Zaire-Emery added a late fourth.

Auxerre produced a remarkable result, defeating Brest 3-0 despite playing with only 10 men for the majority of the match – 84 minutes to be exact. Toulouse edged out Lorient with a 1-0 victory.

In Serie A, AC Milan closed the gap on league leaders Inter Milan to five points with a 3-2 win over Torino. Adrien Rabiot and Youssouf Fofana scored within a minute of each other to turn the tide, after Strahinja Pavlovic had given Milan the initial lead and Giovanni Simeone had equalized for Torino. A late penalty from Nikola Vlasic added a layer of tension to the closing stages.

Juventus were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Sassuolo, with Kenan Yildiz finding the net for the Old Lady. The result leaves them outside the top four. At the bottom of the table, Cremonese climbed out of the relegation zone thanks to a 2-0 away win at Parma, with Youssef Maleh and Jari Vandeputte providing the goals.

In LaLiga, Valencia defeated Sevilla 2-0, with Hugo Duro and Largie Ramazani scoring in the first half to propel their side to 11th in the standings. Levante boosted their survival hopes with a crucial 4-2 win over bottom side Oviedo, who now trail safety by seven points. Osasuna beat Girona 1-0, Getafe won 2-1 at Espanyol, and Elche overcame Mallorca 2-1.

The focus, still, continues to return to Kane’s pursuit of Lewandowski’s record. Recent reports suggest that some believe Kane will only break the record if Bayern are eliminated from the Champions League by Real Madrid, with the argument being that managing his minutes will be crucial for both team success and individual accolades. Former Bayern player Dietmar Hamann cautioned against prioritizing the record over team objectives, emphasizing the importance of progressing in the Champions League. He pointed to a previous instance where Kane was substituted during a Champions League match while Bayern were still chasing the game, a scenario he believes must be avoided.

As Kane closes in on Lewandowski’s mark, the debate intensifies: is he already a better all-around player than the man he replaced? While both strikers are undeniably prolific goalscorers, Kane’s ability to drop deep, contribute to build-up play, and deliver pinpoint passes adds another dimension to his game. The remaining weeks of the Bundesliga season promise to be a captivating spectacle, with Kane’s pursuit of history taking center stage.
