Kevin Durant Passes Michael Jordan on NBA All-Time Scoring List | Rockets Win
HOUSTON – Kevin Durant’s pursuit of basketball immortality continued Saturday night, as the Houston Rockets forward surpassed Michael Jordan for fifth place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. The milestone, achieved during a thrilling 123-122 victory over the Miami Heat, was punctuated by a game-winning tip-in from Amen Thompson at the buzzer.
Durant, 37, reached the historic mark with his second 3-pointer of the fourth quarter, bringing his career total to 32,294 points – two more than Jordan’s legendary tally. The moment was met with a roar from the Houston crowd and a brief, understated acknowledgement from Durant himself, lifting his arms in triumph before refocusing on the game.
“Four more to go,” Durant said with a smile, referencing the four players still ahead of him on the list: Kobe Bryant (33,643), Karl Malone (36,928), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387), and LeBron James (43,229).
The achievement marks another significant milestone in a career already overflowing with accolades. Drafted second overall by the Seattle Supersonics in 2007, Durant has consistently been one of the league’s most prolific scorers, averaging at least 25 points per game in 17 of his 18 NBA seasons. He’s similarly maintained a remarkable shooting efficiency, shooting 50% or better from the field in each of his last 13 seasons.
Durant’s ascent to fifth all-time has reach this season, having already passed Wilt Chamberlain (31,419) and Dirk Nowitzki (31,560). The Rockets acquired Durant in a blockbuster trade with Phoenix last summer, and he continues to demonstrate his scoring prowess in his first season with the team, finishing Saturday’s game with 27 points.
The game itself was a back-and-forth affair, with the Heat employing a 2-3 zone defense that initially presented challenges for the Rockets. However, Houston’s trust in Durant’s teammates, Alperen Şengün and Reed Sheppard, proved crucial in creating the opportunity for Durant’s historic shot. A slight defensive lapse on Sheppard allowed Durant just enough space to release the 3-pointer that cemented his place in NBA history.
Despite missing a potential game-winning shot in the final seconds, Durant’s impact on the game extended beyond the scoring record. Thompson’s game-winning tip-in off Durant’s missed shot secured the 123-122 victory for Houston, capping off a memorable night.
“That’s legendary,” Thompson, who was only four years classic when Durant entered the league, said of witnessing Durant’s accomplishment. “Just being on a team with greatness like that, it’s inspiring, for sure. And witnessing him break these records, it’s been cool to watch.”
Durant’s impact isn’t solely measured in points. A four-time scoring champion, two-time NBA Finals MVP, and 16-time All-Star, he has also earned 11 All-NBA selections and four Olympic gold medals. He embodies a level of skill and dedication that he himself attributes to the players who paved the way.
When asked about his relationship with Michael Jordan, Durant offered a telling comparison. “No. That’s like asking me do I got a favorite Drake song,” he said. “No, they’re just all great. MJ has so many great moments. He just personifies iconic god level – just everything that I believe in, he personifies.”
Despite the significance of the milestone, Durant remained grounded, emphasizing his focus on continuous improvement and the team’s overall goals. “It’s cool, but it’s hard to take in when you’re still on the journey, when you just care about getting better,” he said. “I don’t ever wish to downplay stuff like that, but I’ve got to get up and come to work tomorrow.”
Rockets coach Ime Udoka acknowledged the importance of the achievement while also highlighting Durant’s team-first mentality. “It’s an honor for everybody to be a part of that,” Udoka said. “And as KD has said in the past, I don’t think he cares much about it in the moment. He’s really focused on the season and what we’re trying to accomplish, but I don’t want to just make it an afterthought. Passing Michael Jordan is obviously a huge accomplishment and we celebrated that with him.”
Durant’s journey to this point has not been without its challenges, including a season lost to injury in 2019-20. However, his resilience and unwavering commitment to the game have allowed him to continue to defy expectations and climb the NBA’s all-time scoring ladder. As he looks ahead to potentially surpassing Bryant, Malone, Abdul-Jabbar, and ultimately James, Durant’s legacy as one of the game’s greatest scorers continues to solidify.
