Koeman on De Jong Injury & Pedri-Messi Link at Barcelona

March 10, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Barcelona’s Champions League aspirations remain a topic of debate, according to Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman, who believes other teams are currently better positioned to lift the trophy. Koeman, speaking in a recent interview with NOS, offered insights into the Catalan club’s form, the progress of young players like Lamine Yamal and the ongoing injury situation surrounding midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

De Jong’s Injury and Return

The injury to Frenkie de Jong, sustained in late February during a training session, continues to be a concern for both Barcelona and the Dutch national team. While a precise return date remains uncertain, updates indicate he will be sidelined for more than a month. Koeman provided an update on the midfielder’s condition, acknowledging the impact of his absence. Further details on the specifics of the injury were not provided, but the length of the expected recovery period suggests a significant setback for the player and his club.

Barcelona’s Champions League Prospects

Despite Barcelona’s recent 4-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, Koeman expressed skepticism about their chances of winning the competition. He identified Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal as teams currently operating at a higher level. “I don’t suppose Barcelona are the favourite,” Koeman stated. “Notice other teams that play at Barcelona’s level, like Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal, who I saw against Madrid. They are likewise capable of winning the Champions League.”

Koeman did concede that Barcelona remains a contender, acknowledging their attractive style of play. Though, he also cautioned that teams like Dortmund, even those ranked lower in their domestic leagues, possess the potential to cause upsets. “But yes, Barcelona is one of those teams. I think Barcelona’s style of play is fun. We must admit that Dortmund, who are ranked eighth in Germany, although they are not a big team, they also have opportunities to score goals,” he added.

Deceptive Scoreline Against Dortmund

The emphatic 4-0 scoreline against Dortmund, while a positive result for Barcelona, was described by Koeman as somewhat misleading. He believes the team is on a clear path of improvement, evidenced by the performances of the players. “I think the 4-0 scoreline was a bit deceptive, but the path Barcelona is on is clear and you can see that from the players’ performances,” Koeman explained.

The Rise of Young Talent

A key component of Barcelona’s progress, according to Koeman, is the development of their young players. He highlighted the experience gained by these players over the past two to three years, and praised the strength of the midfield, featuring Frenkie de Jong, Pedri, Fermín, and Gavi. He specifically identified Gavi as “the heart of the team” and noted his positive contribution. Koeman also acknowledged the positive impact of coach Flick, praising his leadership and the atmosphere he has fostered within the squad. “They also have good options in defence, and the role of coach Flick must also be highlighted. I think he leads the team in the best way, and you can see the positive atmosphere.”

Yamal and Comparisons to Messi

The emergence of Lamine Yamal has drawn comparisons to Lionel Messi, a topic Koeman also addressed. While acknowledging Yamal’s potential, Koeman refrained from directly comparing the young winger to the legendary Argentinian. The interview touched upon the development of Yamal amidst the weight of such comparisons, suggesting a focus on allowing the player to mature and find his own path.

Pedri and Messi Connection

Koeman also briefly referenced the connection between Pedri and Messi during their time together at Barcelona, noting a unique dynamic in their play. He observed that Messi would frequently pass the ball specifically to Pedri, highlighting a clear understanding and synergy between the two players. This observation provides a glimpse into the tactical nuances and player relationships that characterized Barcelona’s successful period with Messi at the helm.

Koeman’s assessment paints a picture of a Barcelona team progressing under coach Flick, bolstered by a core of experienced players and promising young talent. However, he remains cautious about their Champions League chances, acknowledging the presence of other strong contenders. The injury to Frenkie de Jong presents a significant challenge, but the team’s overall trajectory suggests a positive outlook for the remainder of the season.
