Korea Falls to Japan 8-6 in WBC, Faces Must-Win Game Against Taiwan

Korea Falls to Japan 8-6 in WBC, Faces Must-Win Game Against Taiwan

March 8, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

TOKYO – The Korea national baseball team suffered a painful 8-6 defeat to defending champions Japan on Thursday, falling to 1-1 in the opening round of the 2026 World Baseball Classic. The loss, played before a fervent crowd at the Tokyo Dome, extends Korea’s losing streak against Japan in international competition to 11 games.

Korea manager Ryu Ji-hyun entered the contest emphasizing the importance of meticulous planning and execution, a philosophy he described as “gyeongcheonwiji” – a Korean idiom signifying comprehensive and organized governance. While the early innings suggested a successful implementation of that plan, a series of pitching changes and late-game struggles ultimately proved decisive.

The game began promisingly for Korea, with a three-run first inning providing an immediate advantage. Still, Japan quickly responded, capitalizing on a series of home runs – including a two-run shot by Suzuki Seiya and solo blasts from Ohtani Shohei, Suzuki, and Yoshida Masataka – to capture a 5-3 lead by the third inning. Korea battled back, tying the score at 5-5 on a two-run home run by Kim Hye-sung in the fifth.

The pivotal moment arrived in the seventh inning. After a scoreless sixth, Korea turned to reliever Park Young-hyun to maintain the tie. Park walked the leadoff batter, Makoto Shugo, and a subsequent sacrifice bunt and groundout put runners on first and third with two outs. Facing a crucial decision, Ryu opted for a controversial move: bringing in left-handed pitcher Kim Young-kyu to face Kendo, a left-handed hitter.

This decision, as noted by several observers, was a gamble. The WBC rules mandate that a pitcher must face at least three batters once entering the game. Kim Young-kyu struggled to find the strike zone, issuing consecutive walks that forced in a run and loaded the bases. He then surrendered a two-run single to Yoshida Masataka, effectively sealing Korea’s fate. Ryu was forced to replace Kim Young-kyu with Kim Taek-yeon, but the damage was already done, the score now 8-5 in favor of Japan.

Korea attempted a late rally in the eighth inning, scoring a run on an RBI single by Kim Ju-won to narrow the gap to 8-6. However, the comeback effort stalled when Kim Hye-sung struck out with the bases loaded, ending the inning and extinguishing Korea’s hopes.

The defeat marks the 11th consecutive loss for Korea against Japan in international play, a streak dating back to a victory in the 2015 WBSC Premier12 semi-final. Korea previously suffered a lopsided 13-4 loss to Japan in the 2023 WBC, continuing a decade-long struggle to overcome their rivals.

Despite the setback, Korea’s tournament hopes remain alive. They will face Taiwan on Friday at noon local time. Taiwan currently holds a 1-2 record and is facing elimination, setting the stage for a high-stakes contest. The Korean team will need to regroup quickly and address the pitching issues that plagued them against Japan if they hope to advance to the next round.

The decision to bring in Kim Young-kyu in the seventh inning will undoubtedly be scrutinized in the days to arrive. While the strategy of matching a left-handed pitcher against a left-handed batter is common in KBO League play, the unique rules of the WBC – requiring a minimum of three batters faced – added a significant layer of risk. The gamble ultimately backfired, contributing to a heartbreaking loss for the Korean team.
