Latvia Women’s Football: Results & Road to World Cup Qualification

Latvia Women’s Football: Results & Road to World Cup Qualification

March 7, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Helsinki, Finland – Latvia’s Women’s National Football Team suffered a 3-1 defeat to Finland on Saturday in a 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying match. The loss marks the second consecutive setback for Latvia in the Group 3 of League B, following a 3-2 defeat to Slovakia in their opening match.

Despite the result, Latvia found the back of the net courtesy of Annija Andersone, who scored a consolation goal in stoppage time. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome a strong performance from the Finnish side, led by a brace from Ria Olinga and a goal from Una Sevenius.

The match took place as part of the qualifying campaign for the 2027 World Cup, with European nations vying for 11 spots in the tournament. Four automatic qualifying places are reserved for the winners of the League A groups, while seven teams will advance through a play-off stage, and one more will compete in inter-confederation play-offs.

Latvia’s current position in League B means their path to the World Cup relies on success within their group and a strong showing in the play-offs. The team will need to finish among the top three in their group to qualify for the play-off round. The group winner will also be promoted to League A for the next qualifying cycle.

The competitive landscape of Group 3 includes Portugal, who defeated Finland 2-0 in their own qualifying match. Latvia is scheduled to face Portugal in their next fixture, adding another layer of importance to the upcoming matches.

Looking ahead, Latvia will have the opportunity to play their next two matches on home soil in mid-April, facing both Portugal and Finland. This home advantage could prove crucial as they attempt to turn their qualifying campaign around. The final group stage matches are slated for early June, with Latvia traveling to Portugal and hosting Slovakia.

The qualification process is structured such that the top three teams from each of the four B League subgroups will advance to the play-off stage. However, the bottom teams face potential relegation. The group winners of League B will be promoted to League A for the next qualifying cycle, while the fourth-placed teams in each group, along with the two lowest-ranked third-placed teams (ranked 27th and 28th overall), will be relegated to League C.

Latvia’s recent success in the UEFA Nations League, where they won their C League group last year, earned them promotion to League B and a place in the 2027 World Cup qualifying competition. They also secured a victory in the Baltic Cup, demonstrating a positive trajectory for the national team.

The qualification format highlights the competitive nature of European women’s football. With only 11 spots available for the 2027 World Cup, every match carries significant weight. Latvia’s performance in the coming months will be critical as they strive to secure a place in the play-offs and potentially reach the tournament finals in Brazil.

The team’s ability to capitalize on their home advantage in April will be a key factor in their pursuit of qualification. Facing Portugal and Finland on familiar ground provides an opportunity to build momentum and gain valuable points in Group 3. The upcoming matches represent a crucial period for Latvia as they navigate a challenging qualifying path.

The defeat to Finland underscores the challenges Latvia faces in League B, but the team’s determination and recent successes suggest they are capable of competing at a higher level. Annija Andersone’s late goal, while a consolation, demonstrates the team’s fighting spirit and their commitment to pursuing qualification for the 2027 World Cup.

The upcoming schedule presents both opportunities and obstacles for Latvia. The matches against Portugal and Finland will test their resilience and tactical adaptability. A strong performance in these games could significantly improve their chances of reaching the play-off stage and continuing their journey towards the World Cup finals.
