Latvian Skiers Compete at Lillehammer World Cup & Junior Championships
Lauri Kaparkalējs of Latvia advanced to the quarterfinal round of the U23 sprint at the World Championships in distance skiing, held in Norway on . The Latvian skier surpassed Olympic semi-finalist Anton Grån of Sweden and quarter-finalist Seleu Gas of Spain, securing the 22nd fastest time in qualification.
Kaparkalējs’ performance marks the second time a Latvian skier has reached the top thirty in a U23 World Championship sprint event, following Raimo Vīgants. The competition, which began in Lillehammer, also includes the World Junior (U20) Championships, scheduled to conclude on Sunday with team relays.
In the qualification round, Kaparkalējs finished just four and a half seconds behind Norway’s Oskar Vīke, the Olympic bronze medalist and a multiple World Cup podium finisher this season. The field included a number of highly-ranked competitors, including Czech Republic’s Jiří Tuz, a World Cup finalist, and Swiss skiers Roman Alders and Noe Nefs, both of whom have achieved top-15 finishes on the World Cup circuit.
Despite a strong showing in qualification, Kaparkalējs was unable to advance beyond the quarterfinal stage. He finished last in his heat, failing to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
Silvestrs Švauksts and Sandijs Suhanovs also competed for Latvia, finishing 59th and 63rd respectively out of 70 skiers. Švauksts was 12.5 seconds behind Kaparkalējs, while Suhanovs trailed by 15.5 seconds.
On the women’s side, Samanta Krampe achieved a 50th-place finish among 65 competitors but did not qualify for the elimination rounds.
The World Junior Championships also saw promising results for Latvia. Fifteen-year-vintage Valts Skujiņš posted the best result among Latvian male juniors, finishing 37th in a field of over 100 skiers. Linda Kaparkalēja, Lauri’s sister, finished 40th in the junior women’s sprint.
The U23 men’s sprint featured a particularly competitive field. Vīke set the fastest qualifying time, followed closely by Tuz, Grån, Alders, and Nefs. These skiers have all demonstrated strong performances on the World Cup circuit this season, with Vīke earning three podium finishes and Nefs achieving multiple top-15 results.
Kaparkalējs has previously demonstrated his potential on the international stage, winning gold at the European Youth Olympic Festival and reaching the quarter-finals of World Cup events on two occasions last season. His performance today suggests a continued upward trajectory for the young Latvian skier.
Elsewhere, a rollerskiing World Cup event held on , saw Linda Kaparkalēja win a silver medal in the junior women’s supersprint, finishing behind Norway’s Emilie Ruud Lia. Lauris Kaparkalējs secured a bronze medal in the men’s World Cup supersprint, while Samanta Krampe earned a silver medal in the same event. At that event, Gustavs Sināts, Raimo Vīgants, Silvestrs Švauksts, and Lauris Kaparkalējs all qualified for the elimination rounds.
