The pressure on Nikolato is palpable, and opinions are divided amongst Latvian football experts regarding his performance. While acknowledging some positive aspects, many believe the results haven’t been strong enough. Kaspars Gorkšs, a former captain of the national team, believes the team’s record aligns with expectations. “These are roughly the results that Latvian fans expected from the national team,” Gorkšs stated.
Across 20 matches under Nikolato, Latvia has managed just three wins, suffering ten losses and drawing seven. The statistics paint a picture of modest progress, but one that falls short of inspiring confidence. FK Metta head coach Andris Riherts echoed this sentiment, stating, “it’s a middling balance – 10 losses and 10 games where they didn’t lose. Of course, You’ll see only three wins.”
Māris Verpakovskis, Latvia’s all-time leading goalscorer and current FK RFS general director, offered a more critical assessment. “Three wins in 20 games is too few, and those losses weren’t all against top teams. The wins weren’t solely against giants either,” he said, highlighting a concerning lack of consistent success.
One recurring criticism leveled against Nikolato is his tactical decisions. Gorkšs pointed to instances of seemingly illogical substitutions, such as replacing players before set pieces, as examples of questionable judgment. However, Verpakovskis also noted some positive changes in the team’s approach. “To be honest, it’s not as bad as it looks on paper. I like some of the positive things, like the fact that we’re no longer afraid to play the ball,” he commented.
Riherts suggested that Nikolato may have lacked sufficient support within the Latvian football structure, specifically mentioning the demand for assistant coaches with a deeper understanding of the local game. He also acknowledged the challenges of building a new identity for the national team, a process Nikolato has been attempting since taking the helm.
The question of whether Nikolato has instilled a clear playing identity within the team remains a point of contention. Riherts believes the coach’s philosophy is evident. “Paolo Nikolato’s philosophy is clear. He wants players who can play with the ball,” he explained. “Everyone understands what he wants – how we want to build from the back, control the midfield. Perhaps we need to work more on the final third.”
Gorkšs, however, is less convinced. “In this time, a clear Latvian national team playing identity hasn’t been established. I can’t say how we, as Latvia, want to play, what our direction is for development. You can’t notice it,” he stated, expressing concern about a lack of a cohesive tactical approach.
Verpakovskis acknowledged the difficulty of improving the team’s attacking output, noting that the final third is often where individual skill and creativity are most crucial, and the hardest to coach. “We still don’t quite know what to do in that final third near the opponent’s goal, and we don’t know how to break down their defense. We acquire to a certain point with our build-up play, and then we seem to run out of ideas,” he explained.
Defensively, Latvia has also struggled under Nikolato, conceding 30 goals in 20 matches. Gorkšs highlighted a decline in the number of Latvian players consistently featuring in strong foreign leagues, particularly in defensive positions and goalkeeping. Riherts pointed to a lack of consistency in team selection as a contributing factor to defensive instability.
The Latvian Football Federation extended Nikolato’s contract until last December, but the agreement included a clause that ties his future to the outcome of the Gibraltar playoff. Verpakovskis suggested that financial considerations may have played a role in the contract negotiations. “Quite often, these situations occur in modern sport, where a coach is given certain conditions,” he said. “As far as I know, behind the scenes, the financial aspect was quite actively discussed.”
Riherts believes that dismissing Nikolato at this stage would be counterproductive, arguing that it would disrupt the process of building a new identity for the national team. “Changes wouldn’t necessarily be the right thing, considering we’ve chosen a course to create our identity in a different way, because Latvian football was previously associated with patiently waiting for a moment and then scoring,” he said. “Here, we want to create a different mentality, which isn’t simple.”
The upcoming matches against Gibraltar represent a defining moment for both Paolo Nikolato and the Latvian national team. The pressure is immense, and the outcome will determine not only their participation in the Nations League C but also the future direction of Latvian football.
