Lea Tahuhu Retires from ODI Cricket: New Zealand Fast Bowler Ends 15-Year Career

March 8, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

A defining career has come to a close in the world of New Zealand cricket. Lea Tahuhu, the nation’s leading ODI wicket-taker, has announced her retirement from the 50-over format, bringing an end to a 15-year international journey. The 35-year-ancient fast bowler departs the ODI arena with a remarkable record of 125 wickets in 103 matches, establishing herself as a cornerstone of the White Ferns attack.

Tahuhu’s ODI debut arrived in June 2011 against Australia, marking the beginning of a career characterized by pace, competitiveness, and a relentless drive to elevate New Zealand cricket. She quickly became a key figure, showcasing her ability to consistently challenge batters and spearhead attacks. Her impact extended beyond mere statistics; Tahuhu’s presence instilled confidence in her teammates and fear in opponents.

Although Tahuhu steps away from ODIs, her career is far from over. She remains committed to representing New Zealand in the T20 format, with a clear focus on defending the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup title won in 2024. She was also part of the victorious 2024 squad and last played a T20I against Australia in March 2025. New Zealand Cricket has confirmed her inclusion in the squad for the upcoming T20I series against South Africa, with the team announcement scheduled for March 10th and the series commencing on March 15th.

Her contributions to New Zealand cricket are undeniable. Tahuhu participated in four ODI World Cups – 2013, 2017, 2022, and 2025 – and holds the record for the most wickets (36) by a New Zealand bowler in the tournament’s history. She was also recognized for her consistent excellence, being selected in the ICC Women’s ODI Team of the Year in 2023.

“It’s always been a privilege and honour to pull on the White Ferns shirt in ODI cricket,” Tahuhu stated in a New Zealand Cricket release. “To secure one game was an amazing feeling. To have been able to wear the shirt and represent my country and my family over 100 times in ODI cricket is something I never could have dreamt of. I’ll treasure every moment and walk away from the ODI game incredibly proud of what I’ve been able to achieve in the format.”

New Zealand head coach Ben Sawyer lauded Tahuhu’s achievements, emphasizing the longevity and impact of her career. “Lea has operated at the top of the women’s ODI game for 15 years, which is a huge achievement for a pace bowler,” Sawyer said. “Lea’s pace has always been a strength, but her competitiveness and drive to push this team forward has stood out and that has rubbed off on the younger bowlers who are now coming through and learning their craft in the ODI game.”

Sawyer further highlighted Tahuhu’s leadership role within the bowling group. “Lea has been the senior member of the ODI bowling group for some time and leaves the group in a great place moving into the next four-year cycle, which is a testament to her leadership.”

Tahuhu’s decision to retire from ODIs allows her to concentrate her energies on the T20 format and franchise cricket. Her continued involvement in the T20 arena is a significant boost for New Zealand, particularly as they prepare to defend their World Cup title in England later this year. She expressed her enthusiasm for the future, stating, “There’s plenty of exciting things ahead and I’m looking forward to continuing to contribute to this team in the T20 format. Winning the T20 World Cup in 2024 was a huge achievement and I’m really motivated to be over in England later this year to aid this team defend our title.”

The impact of Tahuhu’s retirement will be felt throughout the New Zealand cricket setup. She leaves behind a legacy of dedication, skill, and leadership, and her absence will undoubtedly create a void in the ODI bowling attack. However, her continued presence in the T20 squad ensures that her experience and expertise will remain available to the team as they strive for further success.

Tahuhu’s career stands as an inspiration to aspiring cricketers in New Zealand and beyond. Her journey from a 20-year-old debutant to the nation’s leading ODI wicket-taker is a testament to her hard work, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to the sport. While her ODI chapter may have closed, the story of Lea Tahuhu is far from finished.
