Leeds Beat Norwich 3-0: FA Cup Quarter-Finals Reached | 2024 Highlights & Reaction

Leeds Beat Norwich 3-0: FA Cup Quarter-Finals Reached | 2024 Highlights & Reaction

March 9, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Leeds United reached the FA Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2003, securing a comfortable 3-0 victory over Norwich City at Elland Road on March 8, 2026. Goals from Sean Longstaff and Gabriel Gudmundsson in the first half, followed by a late strike from Joël Piroe, propelled the Championship side into the last eight.

The win marks a significant moment for Leeds, a club steeped in FA Cup history but largely absent from the latter stages of the competition in recent decades. Their only previous triumph came in 1972, and this quarter-final appearance represents a chance to rekindle past glories, even if manager Daniel Farke remains cautious about their chances of lifting the trophy.

“To be there in the quarter-finals is a big deal,” Farke said after the match. “It’s a although ago, I think over two decades ago, that we were there the last time.”

The match itself saw Leeds dominate proceedings, taking control early with Longstaff and Gudmundsson’s first-half goals. Piroe’s late effort sealed the victory, ensuring a convincing performance against Farke’s former club. The result extends Farke’s unbeaten run against Norwich to seven matches across all competitions (W5 D2), a testament to his tactical acumen against his previous employers.

Despite the elation of reaching the quarter-finals, Farke was quick to emphasize that Premier League survival remains the club’s primary objective. Leeds are currently engaged in a fierce battle to maintain their top-flight status, and the FA Cup run, while enjoyable, is viewed as a welcome distraction rather than a realistic path to silverware.

“It’s still not realistic for us to win this cup,” Farke stated. “But who knows? We want to enjoy this cup run a bit longer.” He expressed a desire for a home tie in the next round, acknowledging the importance of Elland Road as a motivating factor for his players. “We haven’t had too many home games in the FA Cup in the last couple of decades and for that, we capture it as motivation to be able, perhaps, to write another piece of amazing history for this club.”

The quarter-final draw, scheduled for Monday night, will reveal Leeds’ opponent as they continue their FA Cup journey. They will face stiff competition from remaining contenders including Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, and Chelsea – all established Premier League powerhouses. Farke acknowledged the challenge ahead, stating, “You still have more or less the big names through… So again, we are still not the favourites to win the cup.”

Though, Farke also expressed confidence in his team’s ability to cause an upset, particularly on their day. “But we also know when we have a fine day, we can win, especially one game, against each and every one,” he added. This belief in his squad’s potential, combined with the momentum generated by the win over Norwich, will be crucial as Leeds navigate the challenges that lie ahead.

The victory over Norwich came despite a strong recent run of form for the Canaries, who had won nine of their previous eleven games under manager Philippe Clement. However, they were unable to replicate that success at Elland Road, succumbing to a dominant performance from the home side.

Farke, who was watching from the stands due to a ban, was pleased with the performance of his team and the work of his coaching staff. “Of course I had a privileged view of the goals but I prefer to be with my boys to be on the sidelines,” he said. “I’m pretty happy my coaches and staff have delivered. Another proof you shouldn’t over promote the role of the manager as the players have to deliver on the pitch.”

Looking ahead, Leeds will undoubtedly approach the FA Cup quarter-final with a mixture of ambition and pragmatism. While a trophy may be a long shot, the opportunity to progress further in the competition and potentially create a memorable cup run is a significant incentive. For now, the focus remains on building on this victory and continuing to fight for Premier League survival, with the FA Cup offering a welcome, and potentially historic, diversion.

The club’s last appearance in the quarter-finals, back in 2003 under Terry Venables, ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United. This time around, Farke and his players will be determined to move one step further and write a new chapter in Leeds United’s FA Cup history.
