Liverpool: Richard Hughes ‘Agrees’ Shock Saudi Move Amidst Arne Slot Pressure

Liverpool: Richard Hughes ‘Agrees’ Shock Saudi Move Amidst Arne Slot Pressure

March 17, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Liverpool’s reshaping following the departure of Jurgen Klopp continues to take unexpected turns, with reports suggesting sporting director Richard Hughes is poised for a move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal. The news comes amidst a period of uncertainty for Arne Slot, the incoming manager, and raises further questions about the long-term vision at Anfield.

The changes at Liverpool began in March 2024 with the return of Michael Edwards as CEO of football for Fenway Sports Group (FSG). Shortly after, Hughes agreed to join Liverpool from Bournemouth, tasked with working alongside Edwards to rebuild the club’s sporting structure. The duo identified Arne Slot as Klopp’s successor, and the Dutchman initially enjoyed success, guiding Liverpool to a Premier League title in his first season.

Still, Slot now finds himself under considerable pressure. Liverpool face a challenging task to reach the Champions League quarter-finals, and qualification for next season’s competition is far from guaranteed. The potential departure of Hughes adds another layer of complexity to an already precarious situation.

According to Saudi reporter @Ahmad2man, who has a substantial following on social media, an “agreement” is in place for Hughes to develop into the modern sporting director at Al-Hilal. The reporter claims that all “terms” have been finalized, with only the official contract signing remaining. Hughes’s backroom staff are reportedly preparing to begin operate at Al-Hilal immediately, with the Scot expected to follow this summer.

The speculation isn’t isolated to a single source. Wilson Cox LFC, an account claiming close ties to Anfield, reported last month that Hughes had been considering a move to Saudi Arabia, and now suggests the switch is “very likely.” While Edwards is expected to remain at Liverpool to oversee the search for a replacement, Hughes’s potential exit represents a significant disruption to the club’s restructuring plans.

The timing of these reports is particularly noteworthy, given the pressure surrounding Slot. While Liverpool secured a Premier League title in Slot’s first season, the club’s performance in Europe and their fight for Champions League qualification are now under intense scrutiny. The second leg against Galatasaray is being viewed as a pivotal moment for Slot’s future, with another home defeat potentially turning the fanbase against him.

FSG officials, while acknowledging Slot’s initial success, are reportedly growing impatient. A report from March 5th indicated that Slot had entered a “defining period” for his job, with the necessitate to secure Champions League football and maintain a top-five Premier League position paramount. The availability of Xabi Alonso, though currently unconfirmed, is also casting a shadow over Slot’s position.

Beyond the managerial situation, Liverpool are actively pursuing potential transfer targets. The club is reportedly facing a £138m battle with Real Madrid for an unnamed player, and are also stepping up their interest in a midfielder from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Jamie Carragher has weighed in on Slot’s future, suggesting that the manager’s job is on the line if certain performance goals aren’t met.

The potential loss of Hughes represents a setback for Liverpool’s long-term strategy. His partnership with Edwards was seen as crucial to building a sustainable model for success, and his departure would necessitate another significant recruitment process. While Edwards is expected to lead the search for a replacement, the club will need to act swiftly to minimize disruption.

The situation highlights the growing appeal of the Saudi Pro League, which is attracting high-profile figures from European football with lucrative contracts and ambitious projects. Hughes’s potential move to Al-Hilal would be the latest example of this trend, and could signal a further shift in the global football landscape.

For Liverpool, the immediate focus remains on securing Champions League qualification and stabilizing the managerial situation. However, the uncertainty surrounding Hughes’s future adds another layer of complexity to an already challenging period. The club will need to navigate these challenges carefully to ensure that the changes initiated following Klopp’s departure ultimately lead to sustained success.
