Liverpool Suffer Late Defeat to Wolves – Arne Slot Laments Disappointing Season

Liverpool Suffer Late Defeat to Wolves – Arne Slot Laments Disappointing Season

March 4, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Wolverhampton Wanderers delivered another damaging blow to Liverpool’s Champions League aspirations, securing a 2-1 victory at Molineux on March 3, 2026. The late winner, an 94th-minute effort from André deflected in off Joe Gomez, continued a frustrating trend for Arne Slot’s side and left them searching for answers as the season enters its critical phase.

Rodrigo Gomes opened the scoring for Wolves, but Liverpool appeared to have salvaged a point when Mohamed Salah found the net in the 83rd minute – his first league goal since November. However, the familiar sting of conceding late proved too much to overcome, marking the fifth time this season Liverpool have lost a game after conceding in stoppage time.

The defeat leaves Liverpool in fifth place in the Premier League table, with nine games remaining. They missed an opportunity to draw level with Aston Villa and Manchester United, and could drop to sixth if Chelsea defeat Villa on Wednesday. The result piles further pressure on Slot, who admitted the game “sums up our season.”

“Same old story,” Slot said, offering a blunt assessment of his team’s performance. “Recently we are picking up points because we scored many times from set-pieces. But conclude result, we score one and they scored two and another in (added) time so it sums up our season again.”

The core of Slot’s frustration lies in Liverpool’s inability to consistently convert open play chances into goals. Despite dominating possession and creating opportunities, they continue to struggle in the final third. “What I mean by it sums up our season that we have far more ball possession than the other team and we’ve created most open play chances, but in open play we’ve struggled to score,” he explained. “My expectations have changed throughout the season because I expected more from us and what we are fighting for now. But it’s another setback and we didn’t help ourselves with this result, not at all.”

The manager acknowledged a shift in his own expectations as the season has progressed, reflecting a growing realization of the challenges facing his squad. While remaining pragmatic, Slot also expressed a degree of self-criticism. “If we play this game in this fashion 10 times, I don’t think we lose 10 times but I’m far from sure we win every time – therefore we are not good enough.”

Slot was quick to credit Wolves for their resilient performance and tactical discipline. “Well done by Wolves, they made it really hard for us and compact. If you want to go faster you have to dominate situations on the side, and we struggled to dominate on the sides today. If we don’t want to rely on a deflected shot, we need to do better and play better. But we’ve had enough chances to win the game but credit to Wolves, they fought from the first second to the end and got a little bit of luck they deserved.”

The victory for Wolves represents a significant boost in their fight for Premier League survival. They remain 11 points from safety with eight games to play, but manager Rob Edwards believes his team is finally demonstrating the necessary commitment and function ethic to compete. “Certainly could secure used to it, it’s a good feeling,” Edwards said. “It’s taken a while to realise how hard you’ve got to work to take something from a game, especially at this level.”

Edwards highlighted the transformation within his squad. “There is a stark difference from when we came in to now, the level of fight and work the lads are showing. We’ve got a tight group that are fighting for each other and working hard. Showing that we’re not as subpar as people thought. We’re showing characteristics what I want my teams to have but we are finding a way. That’s where I want it to be.”

For Liverpool, the defeat raises serious questions about their consistency and ability to secure a Champions League berth. Their reliance on set-pieces for goals, as highlighted by Slot, is a concerning trend that needs addressing. The team’s captain, Virgil van Dijk, echoed the manager’s sentiments, criticizing the team’s slow start and lack of decisiveness. “I think it’s down to ourselves. It was slow, we were predictable, sloppy in possession and wrong decision-making. We didn’t concede chances, but if you perform like that then a result like this can be a result of that, and that’s a fact. It was disappointing.”

Van Dijk pointed to a lack of urgency and penetration in the first half as key factors in their struggles. “It’s not one reason why that’s the case. The game nowadays, we over-analyze why things are happening on the pitch…”

Liverpool will have a quick opportunity to respond to this setback, as they return to Molineux on Friday for an FA Cup fifth-round clash against Wolves. However, the lingering issues exposed in Tuesday’s defeat suggest that more fundamental changes may be required if Liverpool are to salvage their season and achieve their ambitions.
