Liverpool Suffer Second Loss in Three, Premier League Top Four Race Heats Up
Jakarta – Liverpool’s hopes of Champions League qualification took another hit on Saturday, falling 2-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium. The defeat marks the second in their last three Premier League matches, intensifying the pressure on manager Arne Slot and raising serious questions about the team’s consistency.
The result leaves Liverpool fifth in the Premier League table with 49 points from 31 games, just two points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa. However, Villa’s recent form – a winless streak of four matches – offers a glimmer of hope for the Reds, though their own struggles to secure victories are becoming increasingly concerning.

Adding to Liverpool’s woes is the looming threat from Chelsea, who sit just one point behind in sixth place with 48 points from 30 matches. Chelsea are scheduled to face Everton on Sunday, offering them an opportunity to further close the gap on Liverpool.
The defeat at Brighton was particularly frustrating for Slot, who highlighted a recurring theme this season: injuries to key players. “What went wrong started off with the lead-up to this game, as so many times happened this season,” Slot said, as reported by liverpoolfc.com. “When we played a very good game and we thought we could bring that level to the next game… we had Mo Salah injured and we have Alisson [Becker] injured. After two minutes Hugo Ekitike [is] out, so that has happened so many times to us this season and again now.”
The early injury to Hugo Ekitike, a dead leg according to Slot, disrupted Liverpool’s plans and contributed to a disjointed performance. Alisson Becker is confirmed to be out during the international break, adding to the defensive concerns. The constant disruption to the team’s lineup is clearly impacting their ability to build momentum and consistency.
Although acknowledging the injuries, Slot also admitted Brighton deserved the victory, particularly in the second half. “But Brighton deserved to win if you gaze at the second half, because in the first half I think it was an equal game but in the second half Brighton were the better team on the pitch and they deserved to win.”
The loss also reignites the debate surrounding Liverpool’s significant spending in the summer transfer window. The club invested approximately £450 million ($602M) in new players, including Alexander Isak (£125m), Florian Wirtz (£116m), and Hugo Ekitiké (£69m). However, the team’s performance has failed to justify the substantial investment, leading to criticism from pundits and fans alike.
Slot defended the club’s transfer strategy, pointing out that Liverpool also sold a significant number of players. “No one in England is used to the fact there are also clubs that are selling players,” he stated, as reported by theguardian.com. “Usually in England when a club is buying £450m like we did, that’s adding to the already great team. But this club has a different model and no one wants to notice that and no one wants to understand this.”
He further emphasized the challenges of integrating new players, citing injuries to key signings like Isak and Giovanni Leoni. Isak has been sidelined since December, and Leoni has been ruled out for the season after playing only one match. These setbacks have undoubtedly hampered Liverpool’s ability to field a consistent and cohesive lineup.
The defeat at Brighton leaves Liverpool in a precarious position as they chase a Champions League spot. With several teams vying for the remaining qualification places, Slot’s side will need to find a way to overcome their injury woes and rediscover their form quickly. The international break offers a chance for players to recover and regroup, but the pressure is mounting on Slot to deliver results upon their return.
