Luka Doncic: Suspension Threatens Lakers vs Pistons Game After On-Court Dispute
Despite a strong performance with 33 points, 5 rebounds, and 8 assists in the win over the Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Dončić is facing a potential one-game suspension and may be unavailable for Monday’s matchup against the Detroit Pistons. The situation stems from a technical foul assessed during Saturday’s game, marking his 16th of the season.
A Dispute Over Family
According to Dončić, the incident occurred late in the third quarter whereas he was at the free-throw line. He alleges that Orlando Magic center Goga Bitadze made comments referencing his personal life, specifically his family, which he found unacceptable. “He said he would sleep with my whole family,” Dončić stated after the game. “And, at that point, I couldn’t stand it, I had to defend myself.”
I’ve disappointed my team by receiving that last technical foul. But, honestly, it wasn’t my intention. I know my teammates support me, so I let them down today, but I hope they rescind and cancel the sanction.

Dončić expressed his frustration with the technical foul and offered a degree of self-criticism while simultaneously hoping for its removal. “Obviously, I disappointed my team by receiving that last technical foul,” he said. “But, honestly, it wasn’t my intention. I know my teammates support me, so I let them down today, but I hope they rescind and cancel the sanction.”
Bitadze Disputes Dončić’s Account
Bitadze offered a different version of events. ESPN contacted the Magic center, who claimed Dončić’s account is inaccurate. “I have great respect for Luka Dončić and his family, and I greatly respect everyone’s family,” Bitadze said. “Where I come from, it is something sacred and we respect each other very much, and I would never say something like that directly. I just responded to some inappropriate things he said in Serbian, which, as I played in Serbia, I understand.”
Bitadze emphasized that the exchange was a reaction to Dončić’s initial comments. “I don’t know if he knew I understood what he said. So I just responded. And it wasn’t anything against his family or anyone. To his family, I truly have great respect.” He added that the entire incident was “a heat of the moment” exchange and apologized to Dončić if his response was perceived as offensive. “I heard what he said and felt I had to respond in the same way. So, on my part, if he feels I said something more or crossed the line, I apologize as a man. I can take responsibility, but I didn’t say anything more than he said.”
Suspension Looms Against the Pistons
This exchange has resulted in Dončić’s potential suspension for Monday’s game against the Detroit Pistons, a crucial contest for the Lakers as they push for playoff positioning. The Lakers have appealed the decision, hoping to have their star player available for the important matchup. According to ESPN, the team asked the league to review the incident and argued that officials should have issued a warning before assessing the technical foul.
Yet, Mark Davis, the lead referee for the game, stated that “both were warned to cease their comments to each other between the two free throws.” Following the free throws, “when the ball entered the opposing court, they were correctly assessed technical fouls for their unsportsmanlike comments.”
Dončić’s potential absence comes at a critical juncture for the Lakers, who are currently demonstrating strong form. The team is riding a nine-game winning streak and has won 12 of their last 13 games, improving their record to 46-25 and securing third place in the Western Conference. His scoring average of 33.4 points per game, along with 8.4 assists and 7.9 rebounds, makes him a central figure in the Lakers’ success.
Saturday’s game against the Magic was a close affair, with the Lakers edging out a 105-104 victory thanks to a last-second three-pointer from Luke Kennard. LeBron James also reached a milestone in the game, surpassing Robert Parish to become the NBA’s all-time leader in games played with 12 points. The Lakers will need contributions from other players if Dončić is unavailable against the Pistons, but his absence would undoubtedly be a significant blow to their chances of continuing their winning streak and solidifying their playoff position.
