Luka’s Birthday Magic & NBA Sunday: Scores, Spurs Surge, Sixers-Celtics Rivalry

March 1, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Lakers Snap Skid on Luka Dončić’s Birthday, Spurs Surge, and Sixers-Celtics Set for Another Thriller

March starts with a monster 11-game slate across the NBA, and Sunday delivered a packed day of action. The Los Angeles Lakers snapped a three-game losing streak with a 119-115 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers, fueled by a stellar performance from Austin Reaves on Luka Dončić’s 27th birthday. Elsewhere, the San Antonio Spurs continued their impressive run, and the rivalry between the Sixers and Celtics is heating up as they prepare for another highly anticipated matchup.

Lakers Overcome Sixers in Birthday Win

In Los Angeles, Austin Reaves scored 35 points in just 25 minutes off the bench, leading the Lakers to a 119-115 win against the Philadelphia 76ers. LeBron James added 17 points and 10 assists for the Lakers, who snapped Philadelphia’s five-game winning streak. The victory came after a draining eight-game road trip for Los Angeles.

The Sixers, led by Joel Embiid’s 35 points and Tyrese Maxey’s 26 points and 13 assists, built a 14-point lead but ultimately couldn’t hold on as the Lakers mounted a big second-half rally. The Lakers led by as many as 16 points in the second half before Philadelphia attempted a late comeback. A steal and 3-pointer from rookie VJ Edgecombe brought the Sixers within three with 36 seconds remaining, but a dunk from Rui Hachimura sealed the win for Los Angeles.

The game was also notable for an injury to Luka Dončić, who limped to the locker room with 3:03 left in the first half with left leg soreness and did not return. This was just the 10th game in which Reaves, Dončić, and James played together this season, a testament to the challenges the Lakers have faced with injuries.

LeBron James committed eight turnovers, but the Lakers’ overall performance, particularly Reaves’ efficiency (12-of-17 shooting, five 3-pointers), proved to be enough to secure the win.

Spurs Continue Hot Streak, Wolves Prepare for Nuggets Clash

Earlier in the day, the San Antonio Spurs extended their winning streak to 11 games with a victory over the New York Knicks. Victor Wembanyama’s performance at Madison Square Garden was a key storyline, as he looked to secure his first win at the iconic venue. The Spurs’ success has been built on a league-leading offense, averaging 124.8 points per game and 31.6 assists per game in February.

In the afternoon’s other ABC doubleheader game, Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves visited the Denver Nuggets. With both teams holding a 37-23 record, the game had significant implications for playoff seeding in the Western Conference. Edwards, averaging 29.6 points per game, is poised to become the first player in Timberwolves history to average 30+ points in a season.

The Nuggets, led by Nikola Jokić, have historically been a tough matchup for the Timberwolves, holding a 3-0 advantage in the season series. Jokić previously logged a historic 55-point, 15-rebound, 15-assist performance against Minnesota on Christmas Day.

Sixers-Celtics Rivalry Intensifies

Sunday Night Basketball featured a matchup between the Philadelphia 76ers and the Boston Celtics, a rivalry that has consistently delivered thrilling contests. The first three games of the season series were decided by a single basket, and the latest installment promised to be another close affair.

Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown entered the game as the top scorers for their respective teams, each averaging 29.1 points per game. Maxey has been particularly impressive against Boston this season, averaging 29.0 points and shooting 58.3% from three-point range. Brown has responded with 27.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists, showcasing his efficiency with 54.5% shooting from the field.

With Joel Embiid sidelined due to an oblique injury, the Sixers will look to VJ Edgecombe and other players to step up and contribute. Edgecombe has averaged 20.0 points over his last five games.

Roundup: Hornets, Raptors, and Pelicans Secure Wins

The Charlotte Hornets continued their strong play with a 109-92 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers, led by Brandon Miller’s 26 points. The Toronto Raptors saw all five of their starters score at least 18 points in a 132-125 win against the Washington Wizards. Immanuel Quickley led the way with 27 points and 11 assists. The New Orleans Pelicans completed a two-game sweep of the Utah Jazz with a 115-105 victory, highlighted by Saddiq Bey’s 24 points and Jeremiah Fears’ career-high 11 rebounds.

Jamal Crawford’s Mailbag: Insights on the NBA

NBA analyst Jamal Crawford addressed fan questions in his latest mailbag. He discussed Jaylen Brown’s development as a leader, Tyrese Maxey’s breakout season, and the potential for the Celtics to become favorites in the Eastern Conference. Crawford emphasized Brown’s improved leadership qualities and Maxey’s dedication to his craft, noting that the next step for both players is to achieve championship success.
