Madrid Derby: Key to La Liga Title Race & Champions League Tactics

Madrid Derby: Key to La Liga Title Race & Champions League Tactics

March 22, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

The Madrid derby carries significant weight for both Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid, though for vastly different reasons as the LaLiga season enters its crucial stages. While a victory for Real Madrid is vital to maintain their pursuit of league leaders Barcelona, Atlético’s focus is largely secured, with Champions League qualification appearing all but guaranteed.

Both teams recently progressed to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Atlético, under Diego Simeone, delivered a statement win against Tottenham, while Real Madrid overcame Manchester City. This backdrop adds another layer of intensity to a fixture already steeped in rivalry.

The Importance of the Early Stages

The opening minutes of the match are expected to be pivotal, carrying a significant emotional weight. Analyst Axel Torres emphasizes the importance of Real Madrid establishing an early foothold, particularly given their recent defensive solidity. “The current Real Madrid, in terms of mood and structure, I find it difficult for them to lose the match if they take the lead, in fact, I find it difficult for them not to win,” Torres explained. He highlights their ability to effectively defend a lead, anchored by a physically imposing and aggressive midfield pairing.

Torres believes a quick goal for Real Madrid would be almost decisive. “They know how to play very well with a lead. They are super solid in the middle. They have found the formula to defend with two very physical and very aggressive midfielders,” he stated. “Madrid knows that a start to the match with a goal is almost synonymous with victory. I imagine an initial stretch in which both teams are very aware of the importance of the first goal.”

Atlético’s Wing Play and Real Madrid’s Vulnerability

A key battleground will be the flanks, where Atlético’s wingers, Giuliano Simeone and Ademola Lookman, will test Real Madrid’s fullbacks, potentially Álvaro Carreras and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Torres points out that these are the areas where Atlético can inflict the most damage. “They are the players who can hurt them the most,” he asserts. He notes that Real Madrid are more compact in central areas, making them more susceptible to attacks exploiting the weaknesses of their fullbacks, a tactic Simeone successfully employed in the first encounter between the two sides this season.

“Madrid is weaker on the outside,” Torres stated. “Both Giuliano and Lookman can attack the depth very well, especially Giuliano, who can hurt in a position where Madrid has mutated so much.” If Carreras does feature, it will be his first appearance in four matches, adding another dynamic to the contest.

The Role of Marcos Llorente

Marcos Llorente’s versatility is a crucial asset for Atlético Madrid, effectively serving as Simeone’s on-field extension. Torres believes Simeone would ideally deploy two players with Llorente’s capabilities. “If Simeone could, he would put two Llorentes on the pitch. He needs him both in the double pivot and on the right flank,” Torres said. He highlights Llorente’s ability to contain Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior in one-on-one situations, citing his current form, physical attributes, and aggressive temperament.

Llorente’s presence is also vital in countering Real Madrid’s midfield configuration, featuring Pitarch, Tchouaméni, and a third central player. “It’s a decision that Simeone will ponder a lot, given that he can be useful in both locations,” Torres explained. The absence of Pablo Barrios complicates this decision, as Llorente would naturally slot into the right-back position if Barrios were available. “I have a feeling that right now he has more coverage in the double pivot, that is, he has more options to have performance there and he may necessitate him more on the right flank,” Torres concluded.

The February 8th, 2026, encounter between Atlético Madrid and Real Betis saw a 1-0 victory for Real Betis, with Antony scoring the decisive goal in the 28th minute. While this result doesn’t directly impact the upcoming derby, it underscores the competitive nature of LaLiga and the challenges Atlético faces even against teams outside the top tier. The match at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano saw Atlético dominate possession with 65% of the ball, but ultimately fall short in converting opportunities, registering an xG of 0.67 compared to Betis’s 0.70.

More recently, on October 27, 2025, Atlético Madrid secured a 2-0 victory over Real Betis, with goals from Giuliano Simeone and Alex Baena. This win extended Atlético’s unbeaten run in LaLiga to nine matches, demonstrating their strong form leading into the derby. The contrasting results against Betis highlight Atlético’s ability to perform against strong opposition, but also their vulnerability to teams that can capitalize on defensive lapses.
