Man City knocked out of Champions League by Real Madrid – Vinicius Jr shines
Manchester City’s Champions League ambitions were extinguished at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night, falling 2-1 to Real Madrid and succumbing to a 5-1 aggregate defeat in the round of 16. A first-half penalty converted by Vinícius Júnior, following a controversial handball decision and subsequent red card for Bernardo Silva, proved decisive, despite Erling Haaland’s goal offering a glimmer of hope for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Despite an early energetic start from City, the tie began to unravel in the 18th minute. Vinícius Júnior, through on goal, saw a shot strike the post and then ricochet off Gianluigi Donnarumma before hitting Bernardo Silva’s arm. After a lengthy VAR review, referee Clément Turpin pointed to the spot and dismissed Silva, handing Madrid the initiative.
Vinícius Júnior calmly dispatched the penalty, silencing the home crowd and effectively ending any realistic chance of a City comeback. While Guardiola’s team continued to press, they found themselves chasing the game with ten men against a clinical Madrid side.
Haaland’s goal just before halftime, a close-range finish, briefly ignited the atmosphere at the Etihad, but it proved to be a mere consolation. City reshaped their attack after the break, adopting a 5-1-3 formation and pushing for an equalizer, but Madrid’s defense, marshalled by Thibaut Courtois, remained resolute.
Jeremy Doku thought he had pulled one back for City, only to see his effort ruled out for offside. Madrid, meanwhile, introduced Kylian Mbappé from the bench, but City continued to pour forward, with Rayan Ait-Nouri as well having a goal disallowed.
The final nail in the coffin came in stoppage time as Vinícius Júnior added his second of the night, capitalizing on a late attack to seal the victory for Real Madrid. The Brazilian winger, who had been taunted by City fans following Rodri’s Ballon d’Or win last year, responded with a pointed celebration, acknowledging the previous jeers.
This marks the third consecutive year that Real Madrid has eliminated Manchester City from the Champions League, a frustrating pattern for Guardiola and his team. The defeat raises questions about City’s ability to consistently perform on the biggest stage, despite their domestic dominance.
Guardiola, speaking after the match, refused to blame Bernardo Silva for the red card, stating it was “not a mistake, it’s a red card, the first of his career.” He also emphasized the challenges of playing against a team as experienced and clinical as Real Madrid, highlighting the importance of avoiding errors.
“The way we start and the way we played, we would love to play 11 against 11,” Guardiola said. “This team, they punish you when you make a mistake.” He acknowledged the youth within his squad, pointing to the Champions League inexperience of players like Abdukodir Khusanov and Rayan Cherki, but maintained confidence in their potential.
For Real Madrid, the victory sets up a likely quarter-final clash with Bayern Munich. Manager Alvaro Arbeloa praised the performance of his goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, suggesting he “is maybe the best in history,” and acknowledged the difficulty of overcoming a team like Manchester City at the Etihad.
Vinícius Júnior’s performance was particularly noteworthy, not only for his two goals but also for his response to the City fans who had previously mocked him following his Ballon d’Or snub. “The last time I came to Man City, they were making fun of me and saying I was crying because of the Ballon d’Or,” Vinicius explained. “It was a way of proving myself to the Man City fans.”
The quarter-finals are scheduled for April 7-8 and 14-15, with the semi-finals taking place on April 28-29 and May 5-6. The final will be held on May 30 at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary.
