Man Utd Transfer Targets & Goretzka Race | Football Rumors 2026

Man Utd Transfer Targets & Goretzka Race | Football Rumors 2026

March 17, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Manchester United are poised to be active in the summer transfer window, with midfield reinforcements a clear priority. The club has outlined a list of targets, and one name consistently surfacing is Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka, who is set to become a free agent at the end of the season.

According to reports, United are viewing Goretzka as a key addition, particularly given the potential departure of Casemiro. The 31-year-old German international has been a mainstay in Bayern’s midfield for eight seasons, contributing 37 goals in 203 Bundesliga appearances as of March 14, 2026. His experience and proven track record make him an attractive prospect for a United side looking to rebuild its midfield.

However, United will face competition for Goretzka’s signature. Juventus have likewise entered the race, making multiple attempts to secure his services in the past. The Italian giants, under Luciano Spalletti, see Goretzka as a crucial addition to their squad and are prepared to make a strong push for his signature. Arsenal, too, have been linked with the player, but recent reports suggest United may have an advantage.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke suggests that Manchester United’s ability to offer Champions League football, coupled with a clearer pathway to regular first-team minutes, could sway Goretzka towards a move to Old Trafford. Arsenal’s already crowded midfield, featuring several established players, may present a less appealing scenario for the German international.

The situation is further complicated by United’s broader summer transfer plans. The club is reportedly aiming to sign four players in total, with two of those slots earmarked for midfielders. Alongside Goretzka, potential targets include Sandro Tonali of Newcastle United, Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace, Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest, Carlos Baleba of Brighton & Hove Albion, and Alex Scott of Bournemouth. The pursuit of Anderson, however, may see competition from Bayern Munich themselves.

Beyond midfield, United are also considering options at center-back and goalkeeper. A left-sided center-back is being eyed as a potential addition, particularly if Harry Maguire departs, and a backup goalkeeper is being sought to replace Altay Bayindir. The club is also looking to offload players to alleviate financial pressures, with significant outstanding transfer payments still owed.

Several players, including Rasmus Højlund, Joshua Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte, André Onana, and Mason Mount, could be moved on, either through sales or loan deals. Marcus Rashford’s future is also uncertain, with a potential return to Barcelona already underway via a loan deal. Jadon Sancho’s contract is set to expire, saving United a substantial amount in wages.

The potential departure of Harry Maguire remains a point of discussion. While his contract expires this summer, his contributions to the squad, particularly his experience and leadership, are valued. A new deal, potentially on reduced terms, could be offered, but Maguire may seek a longer-term contract and a more prominent role elsewhere.

Elsewhere in the transfer market, Barcelona are reportedly keen on securing a permanent deal for João Cancelo, currently on loan from Al Hilal. The club is exploring the possibility of signing him as a free agent, despite his existing contract with the Saudi Pro League side. Juventus are also monitoring Lorenzo Pellegrini, whose contract with AS Roma is set to expire, and are confident of securing his signature.

The Saudi Pro League is also emerging as a potential destination for several players, with Internazionale striker Marcus Thuram reportedly receiving a substantial offer. Juventus are also scouting Ismael Kone of Sassuolo, while Monaco are pursuing Cercle Brugge left-back Nazinho. Filip Kostic is also expected to depart Juventus as a free agent, and goalkeeper Josep Martinez could depart Internazionale in search of more playing time.

The summer transfer window promises to be a busy one for many of Europe’s top clubs, with Manchester United firmly in the mix. Securing a midfielder of Goretzka’s caliber would be a significant coup, but the club will need to navigate a competitive market and manage its financial resources effectively to achieve its goals.
