While the on-field brilliance of players like Alessandro Nesta and Pavel Nedvěd is well-documented, a lesser-known story from that season reveals a remarkable display of courage and camaraderie involving forward Marcelo Salas – and a clandestine medical procedure performed in a solarium.

Salas arrived at Lazio in 1998 and quickly established himself as a key player, becoming the team’s leading goalscorer during their title-winning season. However, his passion for speed extended beyond the pitch, leading to an incident that nearly jeopardized his participation in a crucial derby match against AS Roma.

The story begins with a visit to a solarium with teammate Matías Almeyda. According to Almeyda, Salas had recently purchased a Harley Davidson motorcycle, despite a contractual clause prohibiting such risky activities. “When Salas arrived at Lazio I was the only South American in the club, so we immediately became close… Marcelo was riding a motorcycle he had bought, even though it was forbidden by contract because it was a risky activity,” Almeyda recounted. “Going up a hill, he lost control, fell, the motorcycle ran over him, and he was cut near his calf. Badly, bleeding a lot.”

Salas himself described the incident in an interview with So Foot in 2011, stating, “I broke my mouth and opened my calf. I started bleeding a lot. We called the club doctor to reach help us.”

The urgency of the situation presented a unique challenge. Any conventional medical treatment, including anesthesia, risked triggering a positive result in a doping control test, a consequence the club desperately wanted to avoid. A solution was quickly devised – a makeshift surgical procedure performed discreetly within the solarium itself.

“We settled in a room at the solarium and he stitched it up right there,” Almeyda explained. “They put about eight stitches in, and he had to maintain quiet about it.” Salas confirmed the necessity of foregoing anesthesia, stating, “I had to get stitches without anesthesia because otherwise I could test positive for doping.”

Despite the painful injury, Salas played in the upcoming derby against Roma. Almeyda remembers the game vividly: “We won, but at the end he pulled down his socks and blood was running everywhere. They had just kicked him there. And he endured. Admirable.”

Christian Vieri, another Lazio teammate from that era, offered his own humorous perspective in his memoirs. “With the motorcycle he was a disaster, he bought a Harley Davidson and a few days later he crashed into a tree, so they had to give him seven stitches in his leg. Nobody knew.” Vieri also recalled his own motorcycle adventures, noting that the club eventually requested he switch to a car to avoid similar risks.

“At least I knew how to ride a motorcycle. Salas was a disaster,” Vieri added.

The incident highlights the strong bond within the Lazio squad. Almeyda and Vieri acted as silent accomplices, protecting Salas from potential repercussions. Their discretion ensured that a potentially damaging situation remained a closely guarded secret.
