Max Verstappen to Race Nürburgring 24 Hours | F1 Star’s Endurance Challenge

Max Verstappen to Race Nürburgring 24 Hours | F1 Star’s Endurance Challenge

March 9, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen is adding another challenge to his racing resume: the Nürburgring 24 Hours endurance race. The Red Bull driver will compete in the event in May, piloting a Mercedes AMG GT car on the notoriously demanding 15.8-mile circuit in Germany’s Eifel mountains.

The announcement fulfills a long-held ambition for the 28-year-old Dutchman, who described the Nürburgring Nordschleife as a “special place” and “unlike any other track.” “The 24-hours of Nurburgring is a race that’s been on my bucket list for a long time, so I’m really thrilled we can make it happen now,” Verstappen said.

Verstappen’s participation is noteworthy given the relative rarity of top-tier Formula 1 drivers competing in lower-level motorsport events. While he recently finished sixth in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix on March 3rd, this venture demonstrates a broader passion for motorsport beyond the pinnacle of the sport. He’s known to be an avid user of racing simulator games and has expressed a particular fondness for sportscar racing.

The Nürburgring 24 Hours presents a unique set of challenges. Unlike the precisely engineered circuits of Formula 1, the Nordschleife – often referred to as the “Green Hell” – is a public road during most of the year, presenting a constantly changing surface and unpredictable conditions. The endurance race demands not only speed but also consistency, mechanical reliability, and strategic teamwork.

This foray into endurance racing fuels speculation about Verstappen’s long-term career interests. He is currently contracted with Red Bull Racing until 2028, but has previously been linked with a potential move to Mercedes’ F1 program. More significantly, his interest in sportscar racing has led to discussions about a possible future entry into the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Le Mans, part of the World Endurance Championship, has experienced a surge in popularity in recent years, driven by the introduction of new ‘hypercar’ regulations. The return of manufacturers like Ferrari, Peugeot, Aston Martin, and Ford to the top level of sportscar racing has intensified competition and attracted a wider audience. The Nürburgring 24 Hours, while highly respected, sits a level below Le Mans in terms of prestige and global reach.

The timing of Verstappen’s Nürburgring participation is also notable. The race, scheduled for May 16th and 17th, falls between the Miami and Canadian Grands Prix on the Formula 1 calendar. This allows Verstappen to pursue his passion for endurance racing without directly conflicting with his primary F1 commitments. It also provides a valuable opportunity to experience a different style of racing and potentially refine skills applicable to Formula 1, such as racecraft in traffic and managing tire wear over extended distances.

While Verstappen’s F1 success is well-documented – four World Championships to date – his participation in the Nürburgring 24 Hours signals a desire to broaden his horizons within the motorsport world. It’s a move that speaks to a genuine enthusiasm for all forms of racing, and a willingness to test his skills in a completely different environment. The event will undoubtedly draw significant attention, not only from Formula 1 fans eager to see their champion in a new context, but also from the wider motorsport community curious to witness how Verstappen adapts to the unique demands of endurance racing.

The Nürburgring 24 Hours is known for its unpredictable nature. Teams and drivers must contend with varying weather conditions, challenging track conditions, and the constant threat of mechanical failure. Success requires not only speed and skill, but also a degree of luck and a well-prepared car. Verstappen’s ability to navigate these challenges will be closely watched, and his performance will offer valuable insight into his adaptability and versatility as a racing driver.

The World Endurance Championship recently announced a postponement of its season-opening Qatar 1812km race, citing the ongoing geopolitical situation. This highlights the broader context in which motorsport operates, and the potential for external factors to disrupt even the most carefully planned schedules. Though, the Nürburgring 24 Hours remains on track for its scheduled May date, promising a thrilling spectacle for fans and a significant challenge for Max Verstappen.
