McDavid & Roslovic Lead Oilers to Victory Over Mammoth: Highlights & Recap OR Oilers Beat Mammoth 5-2: McDavid, Roslovic Shine – Game Recap
SALT LAKE CITY — Connor McDavid continued his remarkable season, reaching both 400 career goals and 1,200 career points as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Utah Mammoth 5-2 on Tuesday night. The victory, secured at Delta Center, marked a strong performance for the Oilers, particularly after a pair of recent defeats.
The Mammoth opened the scoring with nine minutes remaining in the first period. Alexander Kerfoot’s shot from the point took a pair of deflections off Darnell Nurse and Connor Murphy before eluding Oilers goaltender Tristan Jarry. The goal, even as on the scoreboard, was described as difficult to assign blame to any single player.
The Oilers responded with just over five minutes left in the first. Jake Walman drove towards the net and passed to Jack Roslovic, who fired a shot past Karel Vejmelka to tie the game at one. Roslovic’s goal ignited the Oilers’ offense and set the stage for a dominant performance.
The second period saw a flurry of activity. Zach Hyman drew a high-sticking penalty, but it was the Oilers who capitalized. Matt Savoie scored on the power play, receiving a pass from Evan Bouchard in the slot. However, the Mammoth quickly answered, with Lawson Crouse scoring off a deflection to tie the game at two.
The tie was short-lived. McDavid scored his 39th goal of the season, and his 400th career goal, by batting a bouncing puck past Vejmelka. Three minutes later, Roslovic added his second goal of the night, capitalizing on a rebound after Hyman’s backhand shot hit the crossbar, extending the Oilers’ lead to 4-2.
McDavid sealed the victory with an empty-net goal, not only adding to his goal total but also reaching the significant milestone of 1,200 career points. This marked his fourth 40-goal season and brought his career assist total to 799.
Beyond McDavid’s achievements, the game featured several notable performances. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins recorded a secondary assist on Roslovic’s first goal, reaching 800 career points. Evan Bouchard had a strong showing with three assists, bringing his season total to 82 points and becoming the 15th defenceman in NHL history with two 80-point seasons.
The Oilers’ forecheck proved to be a key factor in their success, smothering the Mammoth and controlling the pace of the game. The team’s defensive effort was also commendable, blocking a total of 24 shots, with Walman leading the way with four blocks.
Tristan Jarry, in net for the Oilers, stopped 16 of 18 shots, posting a .889 save percentage. While he allowed two goals, neither was directly his fault, with one resulting from a series of deflections and the other stemming from a breakdown in defensive coverage.
The win allowed the Oilers to move ahead of the Vegas Golden Knights in the Pacific Division standings. The Golden Knights lost 4-1 to the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday, creating an opportunity for the Oilers to climb the divisional rankings.
The Oilers will continue their road trip with a crucial game against the Golden Knights on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. MT. A victory in that contest would give them a three-point cushion over the defending Stanley Cup champions and strengthen their position in the Pacific Division race.
