McLaren & Others Withdraw from Chinese Grand Prix Due to Electrical Issues

McLaren & Others Withdraw from Chinese Grand Prix Due to Electrical Issues

March 15, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Shanghai, China – A disastrous start to the Sunday, March 15, 2026 Chinese Grand Prix saw both McLaren drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, fail to even commence the race. The team confirmed that separate issues prevented both cars from taking the green flag, compounding a difficult early season for the British outfit.

Norris encountered an electrical problem in the garage, preventing him from joining the grid. Mechanics worked on the car, but were unable to resolve the issue in time for the start. Piastri, initially making it to the grid, was subsequently forced to return to the garage with a separate electrical or mechanical fault. The double retirement marks a significant setback for McLaren, particularly after a promising showing in the sprint race on Saturday, where Norris finished fourth and Piastri sixth.

“It’s just frustrating,” Norris expressed on Sky Sports, pointing to the power unit as a potential source of the problems. The current engine regulations feature a 50/50 split between thermal and electric power. “It’s the first time (I’ve missed a start), it’s tough to take but that’s just racing,” he added.

McLaren released a statement acknowledging the issues: “Unfortunately, we identified distinct problems on both cars, which prevented them from starting the Chinese Grand Prix.” The team is now investigating the root cause of the failures, with a particular focus on the Mercedes power unit, as suggested by reports following the incident.

This weekend’s troubles continue a challenging start to the season for McLaren. At the season-opening race in Melbourne, Piastri was involved in an incident on his way to the grid, preventing him from participating in the Australian Grand Prix. Norris managed to finish fifth in Melbourne, offering a glimmer of hope, but the latest setbacks raise serious questions about the team’s reliability.

The retirements too impact the early championship standings. With neither driver scoring points in Shanghai, McLaren falls further behind in the constructors’ championship. The team, reigning constructors’ champions, now faces an uphill battle to defend their title. The double DNF adds to the growing list of issues for the team, and will undoubtedly prompt a thorough review of their pre-race procedures and car preparation.

The Chinese Grand Prix also saw issues for other teams. Brazil’s Gabriel Bortoleto, driving for Audi, and Thailand’s Alexander Albon, in a Williams-Mercedes, also failed to start the race. However, the simultaneous failure of both McLaren cars is particularly noteworthy, given the team’s stature and recent success.

The nature of the electrical issues affecting both McLaren cars has led to speculation about a common component or design flaw. The team’s investigation will need to determine whether the problems are linked, or if they are the result of separate, unrelated failures. The coincidence of the issues has prompted McLaren to investigate potential links with Mercedes, the supplier of their power units.

Piastri’s start to his 2026 season has been particularly unfortunate. Having not yet completed a full Grand Prix due to the incident in Melbourne and now the issues in Shanghai, the young Australian driver is eager to get a consistent run of races under his belt. The team will be keen to resolve the reliability concerns quickly to allow Piastri to demonstrate his potential.

The situation highlights the inherent risks and complexities of Formula 1. Even the most well-prepared teams can be undone by unforeseen mechanical failures. McLaren’s challenge now is to diagnose the problems, implement effective solutions, and regain their competitive edge before the championship slips further away. The team’s response in the coming races will be crucial to their hopes of challenging for both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships this season.
