Menšík Falls to Davidovich in Indian Wells Third Round Despite Mid-Match Recovery

Menšík Falls to Davidovich in Indian Wells Third Round Despite Mid-Match Recovery

March 9, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Indian Wells, CA – Alejandro Davidovich Fokina defeated Jakub Mensik in a three-set match at the BNP Paribas Open on March 8, 2026, extending his head-to-head record against the young Czech to 5-1. The final score was 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, marking the sixth career meeting between the two players.

Mensik, who had previously reached a career-high ranking of no. 12, had advanced to the third round after defeating Marcos Giron 7-5, 7-6(4). Though, he struggled to locate his form against Davidovich Fokina, particularly in the first and third sets. The match was played on Stadium 4.

Davidovich Fokina secured an early break in the first set, capitalizing on errors from Mensik to take a 3-2 lead. He continued to dominate, preventing Mensik from earning any break points and closing out the set 6-2. During the set, Mensik appeared to be experiencing discomfort, requiring a medical timeout at 5-2. The timeout, involving medication, did little to alter the course of the set.

Mensik briefly regained momentum in the second set, battling back from a break down. He faced a potential turning point when he went to the bathroom after the first set, exceeding the allotted time limit. Despite this, he managed to break Davidovich Fokina’s serve at 4-4, fueled by a double fault from his opponent. He then converted his second set point with a well-executed backhand passing shot, leveling the match at one set apiece.

The deciding set saw a swift return to form for Davidovich Fokina, who immediately broke Mensik’s serve to start. He consolidated the break and continued to apply pressure, eventually securing another break to lead 4-2. Mensik appeared hampered by a physical issue, and although he briefly resisted, Davidovich Fokina closed out the match comfortably, 6-2.

The match was not without its unusual moments. A tweet from @edgeAIapp during the first set noted Mensik’s medical timeout and speculation about his condition. The Czech player’s struggles were evident in his statistics, with multiple unforced errors contributing to his difficulties on serve.

This victory sends Davidovich Fokina into the Round of 16, where he will face Learner Tien. It marks his second appearance in the fourth round of the Indian Wells tournament, having previously reached the quarter-finals in 2023.

For Mensik, the tournament represents a missed opportunity to build on a strong start to the season. Prior to Indian Wells, the 20-year-old had achieved a career-best ranking and secured his second ATP title in Auckland. He also reached the eighth round at the Australian Open and the quarter-finals in Dubai, even taking a scalp of Jannik Sinner in Doha. Despite the loss, Mensik’s performance in Indian Wells – reaching the third round – represents a personal best at the Masters 1000 event.

The absence of Czech players in the men’s singles draw beyond this point concludes their run at the 2026 BNP Paribas Open. Davidovich Fokina’s win demonstrates his continued prowess on hard courts, while Mensik will look to regroup and continue his promising season at the upcoming Masters 1000 event in Miami.
