Mitch Barnett to Broncos: NRL Star Signs Two-Year Deal from Warriors

Mitch Barnett to Broncos: NRL Star Signs Two-Year Deal from Warriors

March 12, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

The Brisbane Broncos have secured a key piece for their future, signing New Zealand Warriors forward Mitch Barnett on a two-year deal beginning in 2027. The move is widely seen as the Broncos proactively addressing the eventual departure of Payne Haas, who is slated to join Wayne Bennett at the Rabbitohs next year.

Barnett, an Australian and New South Wales representative, reportedly accepted a $2.4 million offer over two years, according to the Daily Telegraph. While several clubs, including the Manly Sea Eagles and Parramatta Eels, expressed interest, the Broncos ultimately proved the most appealing destination.

The decision for Barnett to return to Australia is rooted in personal reasons, as he informed the Warriors of his intention to move back home. His manager, Gavin Orr, emphasized that the move was “family-based” and that Barnett carefully considered all offers before making his decision. “That fitted well into what they want to do with the rest of their life in moving back to Australia,” Orr told the Sydney Morning Herald. “At the end of the day, it didn’t arrive down to money. They were great offers from Parramatta and Manly. Mitch got to speak to all of the coaches before making his decision. He didn’t make it lightly – he did plenty of research on all the clubs.”

Barnett’s arrival in Brisbane is anticipated to fill a significant void in the forward pack left by Haas’s departure. Haas has been a cornerstone of the Broncos’ success in recent years, and finding a player of comparable impact was a priority for the club. Barnett brings a reputation as a tough, uncompromising player, having played 49 games for the Warriors over four seasons and establishing himself as a key figure under coach Andrew Webster.

However, Barnett is currently recovering from a season-ending ACL injury sustained last year. He is expected to return to play within the next few rounds, allowing him to finish his tenure with the Warriors in 2026 before making the move to Brisbane. The Broncos will be hoping he can regain his form quickly and seamlessly integrate into their squad.

The Broncos’ acquisition of Barnett demonstrates their commitment to maintaining a competitive roster and building for sustained success. Despite winning the premiership in 2025, the club recognizes the importance of planning for the future and proactively addressing potential gaps in their team. The signing of Barnett is a clear indication of their ambition to remain at the top of the NRL.

Interestingly, reports suggest that Broncos teen star Antonio Verhoeven could be part of a swap deal with the Warriors. While details remain scarce, this potential move could further strengthen both teams’ rosters. The Warriors are reportedly seeking a like-for-like replacement for Barnett, and Verhoeven could provide a valuable addition to their squad.

Barnett’s decision to prioritize family considerations over financial gain is a notable aspect of this story. In an era where player movement is often driven by lucrative contracts, Barnett’s choice to return to Australia for personal reasons underscores the importance of factors beyond money. This decision reflects a growing trend among athletes who are increasingly prioritizing perform-life balance and family well-being.

The Broncos’ successful pursuit of Barnett highlights their strong reputation within the NRL and their ability to attract high-quality players. The club’s recent success, coupled with its strong coaching staff and passionate fanbase, makes it an attractive destination for players seeking to compete at the highest level. The signing of Barnett is a testament to the Broncos’ standing as one of the premier clubs in the competition.

As Barnett prepares to embark on the next chapter of his career, he will undoubtedly be eager to make a significant impact for the Broncos. His experience, toughness, and leadership qualities will be valuable assets to the team, and he will be expected to play a key role in their pursuit of future premierships. The Broncos faithful will be eagerly anticipating his arrival and hoping that he can aid the club continue its winning tradition.
