Nate Eaton HR Leads Great Britain, Skubal Shines in WBC Loss to USA

Nate Eaton HR Leads Great Britain, Skubal Shines in WBC Loss to USA

March 8, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

HOUSTON – Nate Eaton made an immediate impact in the Saturday, March 8th matchup of the World Baseball Classic, stunning Team USA with a leadoff home run off Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal. The blast ignited Great Britain in their contest against the heavily favored Americans, though Team USA ultimately prevailed 9-1.

Eaton, a 29-year-vintage infielder and outfielder currently with the Boston Red Sox, connected on the very first pitch Skubal threw, sending it over the wall in left-center field at Daikin Park. The home run gave Great Britain a surprising 1-0 lead and momentarily silenced the pro-American crowd in Houston. It marked the second consecutive game in the 2026 Classic where the United States surrendered a leadoff home run, following Lucas Ramirez’s shot against Logan Webb in Team USA’s opening game against Brazil.

The moment was particularly noteworthy given Skubal’s status as the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner. Eaton, however, indicated he wasn’t intimidated by the challenge. “Throughout my career I’ve faced other ones,” he said before the game. “So – not taking anything from him, he’s obviously great – but I go about my routine and do my game planning the way I do.”

Skubal’s outing was brief but revealing. He allowed only two hits – both by Eaton – over three innings, striking out five and walking none. He threw 41 pitches, 30 for strikes, before being replaced by Modern York Mets starter Clay Holmes to start the fourth inning with Great Britain still clinging to a 1-0 advantage.

Despite the early setback, Skubal remained composed. “It was a first-pitch fastball, and he went out and got it,” Skubal said after the game. “We wouldn’t be talking about it if he missed it. I was just getting to my pitches, and the results were the results after that.”

Team USA’s offense eventually broke through after Skubal’s departure. Kyle Schwarber hit a home run, and Alex Bregman and Gunnar Henderson each drove in two runs, securing the victory for the Americans. However, the early impact of Eaton’s home run and Skubal’s limited but scrutinized performance provided a compelling narrative to the game.

Team USA manager Mark DeRosa praised Skubal’s stuff, stating, “Unbelievable stuff, bottom line, 98 miles per hour, devastating changeup, slider.” DeRosa also confirmed that Skubal’s outing was intentionally limited. “But that will be it for him.”

Beyond the on-field action, Skubal’s appearance in the World Baseball Classic also brought his contract situation with the Detroit Tigers into sharper focus. He revealed that he had not received a long-term offer from the team during the offseason and that there were no negotiations during the arbitration window. This ultimately led to a record-breaking arbitration award for Skubal, surpassing the previous high by $1 million.

Skubal’s arbitration case saw him seeking $32 million, while the Tigers offered less. He ultimately won his hearing, setting a new standard for arbitration awards. Despite the contentious process, Skubal expressed his commitment to the Tigers and his desire to compete for a World Series title in Detroit.

“There is no offer,” Skubal told USA Today Sports. “and there won’t be an offer until the end of the season. … My focus is on playing baseball and winning this year. I’ll deal with the contract stuff at the end of the year, and then we’ll kind of witness. And that’s fine. It’s their decision.”

He emphasized his dedication to the team and the city, stating, “That’s where my focus is, trying to win a World Series for the city of Detroit, the team that drafted me in 2018. The Tigers’ fans are excited. they’re really invested in this club, and so are we. You can kind of see that a World Series is attainable with the additions that we’ve made. And that’s all you can ask for, is to play on a team with World Series aspirations year in and year out. So, it’s going to be a ton of fun this year.”

Skubal also noted the unique atmosphere of playing in the World Baseball Classic, contrasting it with the regular season. “This represents a great atmosphere. My legs were a little light there early in the game, and that means you’re in a really cool environment,” he said. “This is one of those games that there’s just different emotions that run through you that don’t really run through you when you’re playing in the massive leagues.”
