Nathan Ngoy: Lille’s Unexpected Hero Stuns Nantes & Captures Hearts

March 7, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Lille snatched a vital victory over Nantes in Ligue 1 on March 1st, 2026, thanks to a dramatic late goal from defender Nathan Ngoy. The 1-0 win at home was secured in the third minute of added time, offering a significant boost to Lille’s league ambitions while delivering a painful blow to Nantes’ hopes.

The match, described as “very long closed and dull” by L’Équipe, appeared destined for a goalless draw until Ngoy’s intervention. The goal, his first of the season in Ligue 1 and his career, came after a corner from the right. A headed flick-on from Meunier found Ngoy in the box, where he controlled the ball and fired a right-footed shot past Nantes goalkeeper Alban Lopes.

Ngoy’s moment of brilliance continues a remarkable run of form for the 22-year-vintage Belgian. He was also the hero for Lille in their midweek Europa League clash, scoring the qualifying goal against Belgrade. L’Équipe highlighted Ngoy’s emergence as an “unexpected hero” for Lille, noting that he’s quickly becoming a key figure for Bruno Genesio’s side. Genesio himself reportedly believes Ngoy’s recent goals are “very, very important.”

The victory is particularly crucial for Lille as they prepare to face Lorient in their next Ligue 1 fixture. Nantes, will host Angers, looking to rebound from this disappointing result. The loss was described as “cruel” by Nantes, with Ahmed Kantari acknowledging the pain of conceding so late in the game.

Ngoy’s journey to this pivotal moment has been one of perseverance. Originally from Molenbeek, Belgium, he began playing football on the streets before joining FC Brussels as a schoolboy. After FC Brussels folded, he progressed through the academies of Anderlecht and then Standard Liège in 2019. It was at Standard Liège where he began to build his mark, making his professional debut on May 22, 2021, against Oostende.

Despite the 1-3 loss in that debut, Ngoy impressed as a central defender, “stopping several goal occasions” from Oostende, according to reports at the time. He quickly signed his first professional contract with Standard Liège, committing his future to the club until 2024. He was identified as one of the most promising young talents in Belgian football, challenging for a regular place in the squad alongside fellow youngster Ameen Al Dakhil.

His move to Lille in 2025 signaled a new chapter in his career, and he is now beginning to deliver on his potential. The defender’s recent performances have not only secured vital points for Lille but have also earned him recognition as a rising star in French football. He currently has one goal in Ligue 1 and one in Europa League play as of March 1st, 2026.

The statistics from the Lille-Nantes match reflect the tight nature of the contest. Lille completed 513 passes to Nantes’ 256, winning 55 duels to Nantes’ 53. Lille had three shots on target to Nantes’ one, and enjoyed 52.7% possession. The match also saw 19 corners for Lille and 3 for Nantes.

While Nantes will be left to rue their missed opportunities and defensive lapse in the closing stages, Lille will be celebrating Ngoy’s heroics and looking ahead with renewed confidence. The young defender’s emergence as a match-winner could prove to be a turning point in Lille’s season, and a sign of things to come for Belgian football.

Ngoy received a yellow card for removing his shirt in celebration of the goal, a minor infraction overshadowed by the significance of his late winner. The win moves Lille closer to their league objectives, while Nantes face a challenging period as they seek to regain their form.
