NRL: Eels Star Iongi Faces Suspension, Panthers’ To’o Hailed as GOAT & Origin Smokey Named

NRL: Eels Star Iongi Faces Suspension, Panthers’ To’o Hailed as GOAT & Origin Smokey Named

March 23, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Parramatta Eels fullback Isaiah Iongi has been issued a Breach Notice by the National Rugby League (NRL) following an investigation into images that surfaced publicly on February 22, 2026. The NRL alleges Iongi’s actions have brought the game into disrepute.

The breach notice requires Iongi to respond within five business days, after which the NRL will determine any further action. The investigation stemmed from photos circulating on social media appearing to present Iongi with an unknown substance and appearing to smoke it.

Whereas details surrounding the substance remain undisclosed, the NRL’s swift response underscores its commitment to upholding the code of conduct and maintaining the integrity of the game. The Eels referred the matter to the Integrity Unit in late February after the images came to light.

Iongi, who joined the Eels from the Penrith Panthers prior to the 2025 season, is expected to receive a suspended one-game suspension, though this remains unconfirmed pending his response to the breach notice. The 22-year-old enjoyed a breakout year in 2025, establishing himself as a key player in the Parramatta backline and earning a long-term contract extension through 2030.

The incident casts a shadow over what had been a promising start to the 2026 season for both Iongi and the Eels. His speed and attacking prowess have been instrumental in the team’s early performances and any potential suspension would undoubtedly leave a significant void in the lineup.

Iongi’s journey to the NRL has been marked by perseverance. Beginning his junior career with the North Devils in Brisbane and attending Wavell State High School, he spent three seasons making 59 reserve grade appearances for the Penrith Panthers between 2022 and 2024 before making his first-grade debut against the Newcastle Knights in August 2024. He also represented the Queensland Under-19s in 2022 and Tonga in 2025, demonstrating his versatility on the representative stage.

The Eels released a brief statement acknowledging the situation, stating the club had notified the NRL Integrity Unit and would refrain from further comment at this time. The club will now await the outcome of the NRL’s investigation and Iongi’s response to the breach notice.

Origin Smokey Emerges in Penrith’s Victory

Away from the Iongi situation, discussion surrounding potential contenders for the New South Wales State of Origin squad is heating up. Former Blues captain Paul Gallen and veteran commentator Mark Geyer have highlighted Penrith Panthers winger Thomas Jenkins as a potential “smokey” – an unexpected inclusion – for the upcoming series.

Jenkins has been in sensational form for the Panthers, leading the team in tries with eight in just three matches this season. His recent performance against the Sydney Roosters, where he scored four tries, has further solidified his claim for a spot in the Blues squad. Jenkins’s path to the NRL is a testament to his resilience, having spent time in the Ron Massey Cup after being released by the Newcastle Knights before securing a contract with Penrith.

Gallen acknowledged that Jenkins faces stiff competition for a wing position, with players like Campbell Graham, Jacob Kiraz, and Josh Addo-Carr also in contention. Yet, he emphasized Jenkins’s current form and ability to consistently find the strive line as compelling reasons for consideration.

Geyer echoed Gallen’s sentiments, praising Jenkins’s perform ethic and determination. He highlighted the winger’s remarkable journey from the Ron Massey Cup to becoming a key player in the Panthers’ attack.

To’o Declared Greatest Winger of All Time

Adding to the accolades within the NRL, former try-scoring specialist Denan Kemp has boldly declared Penrith Panthers winger Brian To’o as the greatest winger to ever play rugby league. Kemp cited To’o’s consistent performance, exceptional try-scoring record, and all-around impact on the game as justification for his claim.

To’o’s impressive statistics, including multiple Dally M Winger of the Year awards and Brad Fittler Medals, further support Kemp’s assertion. His ability to consistently break tackles, gain significant meters, and finish scoring opportunities has made him a formidable force in the NRL.

Hopgood’s Season Potentially Ended by Hip Drop Tackle

In a separate incident, Parramatta Eels forward J’maine Hopgood is facing a potential season-ending injury after a hip drop tackle during the team’s recent match against the St. George Illawarra Dragons. The tackle, executed by Dragons second rower Ryan Couchman, is suspected to have resulted in a torn ACL for Hopgood.

Couchman was issued a sin bin and placed on report for the tackle, which is under scrutiny by the NRL. Hopgood has stated he holds no ill will towards Couchman, acknowledging the incident was unintentional, but also noted the reason hip drop tackles are outlawed. Hopgood was said to have responded kindly to Couchman’s apology post-game.

Despite the injury, the Eels were able to secure a 30-20 victory over the Dragons, demonstrating their resilience and depth. However, the loss of Hopgood is a significant blow to the team’s forward pack and could impact their performance in the coming weeks.
