Olivia Vukosa: Gatorade POY & UConn’s Next Star | 2026 Recruiting

Olivia Vukosa: Gatorade POY & UConn’s Next Star | 2026 Recruiting

March 19, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

STORRS, Conn. – Olivia Vukosa, the 6-foot-4 forward from Christ the King High School in Queens, New York, has been named the 2026 Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year. The announcement, made on Thursday, March 19, 2026, marks the first time a UConn commit has received the honor since Paige Bueckers in 2021.

The Gatorade award recognizes not only athletic excellence but also academic achievement and community involvement. Vukosa joins a prestigious list of past winners that includes three Hall of Famers and 17 WNBA first-round draft picks. The presentation of the award was made particularly special by the presence of UConn legend and WNBA all-time leading scorer Diana Taurasi.

“I didn’t even witness the trophy,” Vukosa told CBS Sports, recounting the moment Taurasi surprised her with the award. “I didn’t see anyone. I saw her through the door and I started crying. It’s definitely a surreal experience and something I’m definitely going to cherish forever… She’s someone I’ve looked up to for a long, long time and it just doesn’t feel real. It feels like a dream.”

Vukosa, ranked as the No. 4 player in the 247Sports class of 2026, averaged an impressive 19.4 points, 17.9 rebounds, 5.5 blocks, and 3.8 assists during her junior year. Her versatility, a key attribute highlighted by Taurasi, sets her apart from traditional post players. “I think when you talk about the way Olivia plays basketball, it’s the new generation. It’s the positionless, it’s having all the skills on the court,” Taurasi said. “I don’t think it’s good enough just to be good at one thing anymore, and I think Olivia shows that when she’s on the court.”

Taurasi further emphasized Vukosa’s basketball IQ, footwork, and hands, noting her ability to make demanding plays appear effortless. “Her IQ, her footwork, her great hands… I think when you play with great players, can they make things that are really hard look easy? She does that, and that’s a testament to her work ethic, on and off the court the way she works.”

Vukosa’s commitment to UConn was a significant decision, influenced by both head coach Geno Auriemma’s directness and the strong recommendation from associate head coach Chris Dailey. Initially, Vukosa was surprised that UConn was interested, even mistakenly believing Auriemma was scouting another player during his first visit to one of her games. “I think it was the first session of the EYBL season,” she said. “I saw him on our court and my first thought was that he wasn’t there for me at all and that he was there for someone else, and if I played good I got lucky.”

The offer from Auriemma came with a clear directive: commit immediately. “That car ride home, him talking to me and saying that you have an offer and Make sure to take it right now, that’s definitely my first impression of him,” Vukosa recalled. She also noted the similarities between Auriemma’s coaching style and that of her coaches at Christ the King.

Vukosa will be joining a UConn team that includes Sarah Strong, the reigning national Freshman of the Year, creating a potentially formidable duo. Vukosa expressed her excitement about playing alongside Strong, stating, “Everything,” when asked what she liked about Strong’s game. “She’s just an all-around player and I can’t wait to feed her the ball and I hope she is excited to feed me the ball in the post.”

Vukosa’s accolades extend beyond the Gatorade award. She was also named the 2024-25 Gatorade New York Girls Basketball Player of the Year and the New York MaxPreps High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year. Internationally, she represents Croatia, where her grandparents are from, and recently made her senior debut for the national team, averaging 11.3 points and 6.7 rebounds in 2027 Women’s EuroBasket qualifying games. She previously competed for Croatia at the U16 and U17 levels, earning All-Star recognition at both tournaments.

UConn, currently the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament, is aiming to win back-to-back championships for the first time since their four-peat from 2013 to 2016. They will begin their tournament journey against UTSA on Saturday afternoon.

Vukosa’s signing was announced by UConn on November 12, 2025, with Auriemma praising her skills, work ethic, and fit within the program’s tradition of successful post players. “We think Olivia is one of those players that we’ve had so much success with,” Auriemma said. “She’s a big kid who can move, she has skills, she’s smart. She works really hard at both ends of the floor. She comes from a great program. I think she’s the kind of basketball big kid that the game demands today.”
