Osula’s Late Goal Hands Newcastle Victory Over 10-Man Man Utd

Osula’s Late Goal Hands Newcastle Victory Over 10-Man Man Utd

March 5, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Newcastle United demonstrated a familiar resilience and a touch of unpredictable brilliance to defeat Manchester United Thursday night, a result that simultaneously offered hope for the Magpies’ season and raised fresh questions about Michael Carrick’s tenure at Old Trafford. A 90th-minute winner from substitute Will Osula sealed a 2-1 victory for Eddie Howe’s side, who played the majority of the second half with ten men following Jacob Ramsey’s controversial dismissal.

The match unfolded as a compelling narrative of tactical adjustments and individual moments of quality. Anthony Gordon had given Newcastle the lead from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time, only for Casemiro to equalize for United in a lengthy period of added time before the break. However, it was Osula’s late intervention – a dazzling run and composed finish – that ultimately proved decisive.

Howe acknowledged the chaotic element that often defines his team’s best performances, singling out Osula as a key catalyst. “Will’s delivered an amazing moment for the supporters here, let’s hope it’s a turning point for him,” Howe said. “And it’s a big moment for us. We showed we’re competitive against any team. With both 11 and 10 men we deserved to win.”

The victory ended a damaging run of three consecutive home league defeats for Newcastle, lifting them to 12th place in the Premier League table. While a title challenge remains a distant prospect, the performance offered a much-needed boost and a clear indication of the team’s potential when operating at its peak.

For Manchester United, the defeat represents a setback in what has been an otherwise promising run under Carrick. Having collected 19 points from a possible 21 under the interim manager, United arrived at St. James’ Park brimming with confidence. However, they were unable to replicate that form, struggling to break down a resolute Newcastle defense and ultimately succumbing to Osula’s late heroics.

Carrick was scathing in his assessment of his team’s performance. “I’m bitterly disappointed,” he stated. “We’re not happy with the way we played. It hurts me to say that Newcastle deserved to win. We can’t make excuses. The quality wasn’t good enough.”

The match was punctuated by moments of controversy, most notably Ramsey’s sending off for a perceived dive. Howe vehemently disputed the decision, stating, “I thought it was incredibly harsh. Jacob didn’t dive.” The incident undoubtedly influenced the complexion of the game, forcing Newcastle to dig deep and defend resolutely for much of the second half.

Tactically, the game saw both managers attempt to impose their respective philosophies. Newcastle, with Sandro Tonali orchestrating play from midfield and Lewis Hall providing width from left-back, initially dominated possession and pressed United high up the pitch. United, however, gradually worked their way into the contest, with Bruno Fernandes proving a constant threat and creating several opportunities for his teammates.

The presence of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko on Manchester United’s teamsheet – players who had been linked with moves to Newcastle last summer – added an intriguing subplot to the encounter. However, all three proved largely peripheral figures, struggling to make a significant impact on the game.

Gordon’s penalty, awarded after he was brought down by Fernandes, proved a pivotal moment. The England winger calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net, sending the home crowd into raptures. However, United responded swiftly, with Casemiro rising highest to head home Fernandes’s free-kick and level the scores.

Howe’s decision to introduce Osula in the second half proved inspired. The young Dane, who had struggled in a Champions League outing against Qarabag recently, showcased his unpredictable skill set, embarking on a mazy run before unleashing a stunning finish that left the United goalkeeper with no chance. The goal was Osula’s first since September and a testament to his raw talent, a talent that reportedly attracted a £30m bid from Eintracht Frankfurt last year.

The late goal sparked wild celebrations among the Newcastle faithful and secured a valuable three points for Howe’s side. While the season remains a challenging one, the victory against Manchester United provides a platform for future success and a reminder of the team’s capabilities when operating at its best. For Carrick and Manchester United, the defeat serves as a harsh lesson and a call for improvement as they continue their pursuit of Champions League qualification.
