Petracca Dominates as Suns Thrash Cats in AFL Opening Round

Petracca Dominates as Suns Thrash Cats in AFL Opening Round

March 6, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

GOLD COAST, AUSTRALIA – Christian Petracca emphatically announced his arrival at the Gold Coast Suns with a dominant performance Friday night, leading his fresh team to a resounding 56-point victory over Geelong in the AFL’s Opening Round. The final score was 19.11 (125) to 10.9 (69) at People First Stadium.

Petracca, in his debut for the Suns after 11 seasons with Melbourne, was a constant threat, finishing with 34 disposals, three goals and six clearances. His impact was immediate and undeniable, setting the tone for a Gold Coast team that looked a class above last year’s Grand Final runners-up.

The Suns seized control of the game from the outset, kicking seven goals in the first quarter and never relinquishing their grip. Bailey Humphrey contributed significantly to the early onslaught, booting three majors in the opening term. Ben King likewise proved a potent force up forward, adding four goals to the tally.

Playing without Matt Rowell due to a finger injury, Gold Coast demonstrated impressive depth and resilience. John Noble (28 disposals, two goals) and Touk Miller (30 disposals, one goal) were also pivotal in the Suns’ comprehensive win. The team’s ability to win the ball back in the forward half and generate scoring opportunities – totaling 71 inside 50s – proved crucial.

Geelong struggled to contain the Suns’ relentless attack and found themselves consistently outmatched in the contest. Despite a late surge in the fourth quarter, kicking five goals, the damage had already been done. The absence of key players Patrick Dangerfield and Jeremy Cameron was keenly felt, though their presence wouldn’t have necessarily altered the outcome given the Suns’ dominance.

Tanner Bruhn provided a bright spark for the Cats, collecting 31 disposals and contributing two goal assists in his first game since 2024. Ollie Dempsey also showed promise, finishing with four goals, but it wasn’t enough to salvage a result for Geelong.

The first quarter set the stage for the Suns’ victory. Humphrey’s three goals, including marks from well-placed passes by Wil Powell and Leo Lombard, highlighted Gold Coast’s efficient ball movement and accurate finishing. Petracca’s first goal in Suns colors, a beautifully threaded right-footed shot from a tight angle, ignited the crowd and signaled his intent.

The second quarter followed a similar pattern, with Petracca adding another goal on the run. Geelong attempted to regain control, but Gold Coast’s relentless pressure and ability to win ground balls inside their forward 50 proved too much to overcome. Goals from Ben King, Touk Miller, and Ben Long extended the Suns’ lead to a commanding 42 points at halftime.

A notable moment came early in the game when rookie Zeke Uwland, drafted at No.2 in last year’s AFL Draft, showcased glimpses of his potential despite a nervous start. After an initial kick out of bounds, Uwland quickly recovered and became involved in the Suns’ dominant first-quarter performance.

Bailey Smith, coming off a stellar first season with Geelong that earned him an All-Australian jacket, had a relatively quiet night, gathering just seven disposals in the first half before working his way into the game to finish with 23.

Scoreboard Summary:
