Players Championship 2024: Åberg & Schauffele Lead, Scheffler Struggles – Round 3 Tee Times & TV Guide

Players Championship 2024: Åberg & Schauffele Lead, Scheffler Struggles – Round 3 Tee Times & TV Guide

March 14, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Ludvig Åberg has commandeered the lead at The Players Championship, carding a stunning 9-under 63 on Friday to establish a two-shot advantage over Xander Schauffele. The leaderboard at TPC Sawgrass is remarkably congested, with 15 players within striking distance heading into Saturday’s moving day.

Åberg’s performance was a masterclass in ball-striking and opportunistic scoring. He opened with a blistering run, reaching 5-under through his first four holes, and continued to build momentum throughout the round. Two chipped-in shots – a birdie on the 4th and an eagle on the par-5 9th – highlighted his exceptional form, contributing to a front-nine score of 29, tying the Stadium Course record. Even a muffed chip resulted in a salvaged bogey thanks to an 8-foot putt.

“I suppose my mind is particularly good when it’s simple, and when things are very easy, and that’s what I’ve been able to do over the last couple of weeks,” Åberg said, reflecting on his focused mindset. He currently sits at 12-under 132, a position he’s surprisingly unfamiliar with at TPC Sawgrass, having not played the Stadium Course this year until a practice round on Tuesday. His decision to make Ponte Vedra Beach his home after his time at Texas Tech is clearly paying dividends.

Schauffele, the two-time PGA Champion, is Åberg’s closest competitor after a stellar round of 65. His driving performance was particularly impressive, hitting all 14 fairways, a testament to his precision and control. This allowed him to navigate the challenging corridors of TPC Sawgrass and create numerous birdie opportunities.

While Åberg and Schauffele lead the charge, the championship remains wide open. Cameron Young, Justin Thomas, Tommy Fleetwood, Viktor Hovland, and Russell Henley all find themselves within four shots of the lead, setting the stage for a thrilling Saturday. The depth of talent near the top underscores the competitive nature of this year’s tournament.

The day wasn’t without its struggles for the world’s top players. Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked golfers respectively, find themselves well off the pace, tied for 51st at 13 shots back. Scheffler’s day was particularly fraught with difficulty, missing birdie chances and finding trouble in the rough on the 14th. A missed 30-inch par putt on the 16th further compounded his woes, putting his streak of 69 consecutive cuts made on the PGA Tour in jeopardy.

Scheffler managed to find the fairway on the infamous 17th hole, avoiding further damage, but the situation highlights the unforgiving nature of TPC Sawgrass. The course demands precision and resilience, and even the best players are vulnerable to setbacks.

The contrast between Åberg’s seamless performance and Scheffler’s struggles underscores the unpredictable nature of golf. Åberg’s ability to simplify his game and maintain a clear mental state has been key to his success thus far. His focus on posture and downswing mechanics – maintaining a tall stance and allowing for full hip rotation – are elements that other golfers could learn from.

As the tournament enters Moving Day, the pressure will intensify. The crowded leaderboard suggests that a low score will be necessary to contend for the title. The players will demand to navigate the challenging conditions of TPC Sawgrass, including the iconic island green on the 17th, and capitalize on their opportunities.

With so many talented golfers in contention, anything can happen on Saturday in Ponte Vedra Beach. The battle for the lead promises to be a captivating spectacle, and fans can follow the action with Round 3 tee times and a complete TV schedule available online. The Players Championship is shaping up to be a memorable event, and the coming rounds will undoubtedly deliver drama and excitement.
