Rafa Mir & Omar El Hilali: Racism Protocol Activated in Elche vs Espanyol Match

March 1, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

The LaLiga EA Sports match between Elche and Espanyol on Sunday, March 1, 2026, was temporarily halted in the 79th minute following accusations of a racist insult directed at Espanyol player Omar El Hilali by Elche’s Rafa Mir. The incident triggered the league’s anti-racism protocol, bringing play to a standstill while officials investigated the claim.

According to the match officials’ report, El Hilali informed referee Iosu Galech Apezteguía that Mir had used a racially charged slur during a confrontation on the pitch. Specifically, El Hilali alleged that Mir said, “Viniste en patera” – a phrase referencing illegal immigration by boat. The referee immediately activated the anti-racism protocol, a procedure designed to address and respond to discriminatory behavior within the league.

The game was paused for several minutes as the referee spoke with both team benches. Play resumed after a warning was issued, but the incident cast a shadow over the remainder of the match, which ultimately ended in a 2-2 draw after Mir scored the equalizing goal for Elche.

Edu Expósito, a player for Espanyol, spoke to the media after the game, expressing his outrage and calling for stronger action from LaLiga. It’s a racist act. LaLiga has to obtain involved. He said that. You’ll see microphones and cameras. Besides, a teammate heard it. Let’s see if all the campaigns that are done serve for something, Expósito stated, highlighting the availability of evidence and the need for meaningful consequences.

The incident is particularly noteworthy as it is the second such event in a short period, following a similar situation involving Vinícius Júnior in Lisbon just fifteen days prior. This raises concerns about a potential rise in racist incidents within European football and the effectiveness of current preventative measures.

Urko González, a teammate of El Hilali, reportedly corroborated the account, providing further weight to the accusation. The league is expected to investigate the matter further, utilizing the available evidence – including audio recordings and camera footage – to determine the veracity of the claim. Manolo González, in a post-match press conference, acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, stating, Racism must be removed from football and from life. All insults must be eradicated. These are unpleasant situations. It comes from Rafa Mir, but I put it in quotation marks. Omar is the one who knows. González’s cautious wording reflects the need for a thorough investigation before definitive conclusions are drawn.

El Hilali left the Martínez Valero stadium accompanied by Espanyol security personnel, visibly shaken by the incident. Television footage showed Mir covering his mouth during the confrontation, and a noticeable reaction from Urko González as El Hilali approached the referee. This visual evidence, combined with the testimony of both players, will be crucial to the league’s investigation.

The incident underscores the ongoing struggle against racism in football and the importance of robust protocols to address discriminatory behavior. LaLiga’s swift activation of the anti-racism protocol demonstrates a commitment to tackling the issue, but the effectiveness of these measures will ultimately be judged by the consequences that follow. The league’s response will be closely watched by players, clubs, and fans alike, as they seek assurance that discriminatory behavior will not be tolerated on or off the pitch.

Carlos Romero, the referee for a different match, received contrasting attention on the same day, but the focus remained on the broader issue of conduct within the sport. While Romero’s performance was debated, the incident involving Mir and El Hilali served as a stark reminder of the challenges facing football in its efforts to create a more inclusive and respectful environment.
