Real Madrid Stunned by Getafe | La Liga Upset & Title Race Twist

Real Madrid Stunned by Getafe | La Liga Upset & Title Race Twist

March 3, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Real Madrid suffered a shock defeat at the Santiago Bernabéu on Monday, falling 1-0 to Getafe in La Liga. The result leaves Los Blancos four points behind league leaders Barcelona, compounding a frustrating period for Álvaro Arbeloa’s side.

Martín Satriano’s stunning first-half volley proved to be the difference, a goal that came against the run of play but was arguably deserved for Getafe’s defensive resilience. The defeat marks Real Madrid’s second consecutive league loss, raising questions about their form and ability to challenge for the title.

The match unfolded with Real Madrid largely controlling possession, particularly in the first half. Vinícius Júnior, as has become customary, was their primary attacking outlet, creating several opportunities but finding Getafe goalkeeper David Soria in inspired form. Soria denied Vinícius on multiple occasions, and also thwarted a promising effort from Arda Guler.

However, Getafe capitalized on their limited chances. Satriano’s goal, a spectacular strike from the edge of the box, sent a shockwave through the Bernabéu. The Uruguayan’s volley left Thibaut Courtois with no chance, giving the visitors a lead they would fiercely defend.

Despite a more improved performance after the break, Real Madrid struggled to break down Getafe’s stubborn defense. Toni Rüdiger headed narrowly wide, while Franco Mastantuono tested Soria with a couple of shots. Vinícius Júnior continued to tirelessly lead the attack, but Getafe’s resistance proved too strong.

Arbeloa attempted to inject fresh impetus into his side, making three substitutions within the first ten minutes of the second half, including the removal of Trent Alexander-Arnold. However, the changes failed to yield the desired result, as Getafe remained resolute.

The evening took a further turn for the worse for Real Madrid in stoppage time. Franco Mastantuono was shown a red card for abusive language directed towards referee Alejandro Muniz Ruiz, adding to the sense of frustration and disappointment at the Bernabéu. Shortly after, Getafe’s Adrian Liso was also sent off for a second yellow card, receiving a caution for time wasting.

The result is a significant boost for Barcelona, who currently top the La Liga table with four points separating them from Real Madrid. Barcelona secured a win against Villarreal over the weekend, further solidifying their position at the summit.

Despite the setback, Arbeloa remained defiant in his post-match comments. “Now we have no other goal than to win the 36 points that are still at stake,” he told Spanish publication Marca. “This is Real Madrid, and no one gives up here. There is a gap that we believe One can close.”

Arbeloa acknowledged the team’s struggles but emphasized the importance of maintaining belief. “Notice 36 points left to play for, and the goal is to receive them all. I know things look bleak right now, and there isn’t much hope when you lose like this, but we must continue to win. No one here is throwing away the league, and no one is giving up. We know there is a lot to improve, but I have nothing to say about the team’s effort. Of course, we can do better, and the responsibility is mine.”

The absence of Kylian Mbappé, sidelined with a knee injury, was keenly felt by Real Madrid. The French forward has been struggling with an external ligament injury since the end of 2025, and his absence clearly impacted the team’s attacking threat. The team also missed Jude Bellingham, who was also unavailable due to injury.

The defeat raises questions about Real Madrid’s ability to cope with injuries to key players and their consistency in challenging for the La Liga title. With Barcelona in strong form, Arbeloa’s side will need to rediscover their winning touch quickly if they are to remain in contention.
