Republic of Ireland vs France: Women’s World Cup Qualifier – TV & Live Updates

Republic of Ireland vs France: Women’s World Cup Qualifier – TV & Live Updates

March 2, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

TALLAGHT STADIUM – The Republic of Ireland begin their FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying campaign against France on Tuesday evening, seeking a statement victory to kickstart their Group A2 ambitions. The match, taking place at Tallaght Stadium with a 7:30 PM kick-off, will be broadcast live on RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player, with extended coverage also available on RTÉ Radio 1 and a live blog on rte.ie/sport.

Ireland face a challenging group, also including the Netherlands and Poland, and manager Carla Ward recognizes the importance of capitalizing on home advantage. A win against France would not only provide a crucial three points but also send a clear message to their rivals. The entire qualifying campaign is condensed into windows across March, April, and June, adding further pressure to perform from the outset.

While the task is daunting, Ireland enter the contest with a recent positive result against their French counterparts. A 3-1 victory over France at Páirc Uí Chaoimh in July 2024 offers a psychological boost, though Ward is acutely aware that past results offer no guarantees.

Marginal Gains and a Tactical Adjustment

Ward has implemented a subtle but potentially significant tactical adjustment, opting to play the match on the smallest allowable pitch dimensions permitted by FIFA regulations – 100 metres long by 64 metres wide. This decision, confirmed by Ward, is aimed at condensing the game and limiting the space available to the French, known for their dangerous attacking transitions.

“We’re coming up against the best in the world, one per cents matter,” Ward explained. “I couldn’t tell you what it was before, I can only tell you what FIFA guidelines are, which is 64.” She elaborated on the rationale, stating, “Good teams want space, right? When you play on somewhere like the Aviva, it definitely gives the advantage to the better, on paper, the better opposition. We’ve got to make it difficult.”

The Irish squad has been training on narrower pitches in preparation for this tactical shift, emphasizing the importance of compactness and denying France the opportunity to exploit their pace, and creativity. Ward acknowledged the quality of the opposition, describing them as “deadly in transition, aggressive, front-footed, they’ve got world-class talent in every single position.” She further emphasized France’s strength in depth, a factor that sets them apart from many other nations.

Squad News and Key Returns

Ireland welcome back several key players for this crucial qualifier. Goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan, midfielder Megan Connolly, and attacker Leanne Kiernan have all recovered from injuries that kept them sidelined for the recent victory over Belgium. Their return provides a significant boost to the squad’s depth and experience.

Tara O’Hanlon retains her place in the squad following a substitute appearance in November’s friendly against Hungary. However, Hayley Nolan is a doubt for the match after picking up a knock in training. The availability of Nolan will be assessed closer to kick-off.

France Aim to Dictate Group Pace

France, as the top seeds in Group A2, are determined to establish control of the group from the outset. Head coach Laurent Bonadei has set a target of securing six points from their opening two matches – against Ireland and Poland – before a challenging April double-header against the Netherlands.

Bonadei acknowledged the difficulty of the group but emphasized the need to be competitive from the start. “It’s a tough group, as is the case with every Nations League draw,” he said. “All the groups are necessarily balanced. Ireland is a difficult team to play against, especially at home, with matches that are always very competitive and physical.”

He stressed the importance of replicating their success from previous qualifying campaigns, where they quickly established a lead and ultimately finished top of their group. With only the group winner guaranteed a place at the World Cup, France are keen to avoid any slip-ups.

Injury Concerns for Les Bleues

France will be without several key players due to injury, including Selma Bacha, Delphine Cascarino, and Griedge Mbock. Bonadei has responded by handing first international call-ups to Anais Ebayilin and Alice Pinguet, adding fresh faces to the squad. However, he is unlikely to significantly alter his starting eleven, potentially introducing the newcomers from the bench if the game allows.

The weather forecast for Tuesday is favorable, with a dry, sunny day expected. Temperatures will rise to between 9 and 12 degrees Celsius, with light to moderate variable breezes. Crucially, no rain is forecast, ensuring optimal playing conditions at Tallaght Stadium.

Ireland’s task is clear: deliver a performance that reflects their ambition and lays a solid foundation for their World Cup qualifying campaign. Facing one of the best teams in the world, they will need to be at their very best to secure a positive result and ignite their hopes of reaching the tournament in Brazil.
