Royce Keys WWE Future: No Current Plans for Powerhouse Hobbs
Despite a promising debut at the Royal Rumble in January, the future of Royce Keys within WWE remains uncertain. Multiple reports indicate that creative plans for the former Powerhouse Hobbs are currently non-existent, leaving his place within the organization in a state of limbo.
The latest update comes from WrestleVotes Radio, as reported by WrestlingNews.co, which stated bluntly that “nothing” is currently in the works for Keys. This follows his appearance at the Royal Rumble where he notably eliminated Damian Priest before being ousted by Bronson Reed – a performance that initially generated excitement among fans.
While Keys has been present at recent WWE television tapings, including SmackDown, his appearances have been limited to backstage presence and a dark match against Nathan Frazer. WrestleVotes Radio elaborated on the situation, stating, “Big question mark. Absolutely nothing. You understand, we had speculated that SmackDown was the place for him. It certainly does still seem like that’s going to be his home. I know he was backstage Friday night. Saw some pictures of him. Don’t know when he’s showing up on TV. Hopefully, they have an idea. Hopefully, What we have is part of the plan.”
The lack of a clear direction for Keys is particularly notable given previous reports suggesting a potential program with Damian Priest. However, those plans were reportedly scrapped due to broader creative changes heading into WrestleMania 42, scheduled for April 18 and April 19, 2026. The event will be headlined by CM Punk defending the World Heavyweight Championship against Roman Reigns, and it remains unclear if Keys will be integrated into the card.
Keys’ activity hasn’t been entirely absent from WWE programming. He recently appeared on the “What’s Your Story?” podcast with Stephanie McMahon, with clips from the interview being aired during an episode of Friday Night SmackDown. However, this limited exposure hasn’t translated into a consistent on-screen role.
The situation highlights the often-fluid nature of creative direction in professional wrestling. A strong debut, like Keys’ at the Royal Rumble, doesn’t guarantee immediate placement on a weekly roster. WWE’s creative team frequently adjusts plans based on a variety of factors, including audience reaction, storyline developments, and the overall direction of the product.
The reports from WrestleVotes Radio, echoed by Wrestlezone.com and 411Mania.com, paint a picture of a talented performer currently waiting for an opportunity. His size and power, previously showcased in AEW as Powerhouse Hobbs, are assets that WWE could undoubtedly utilize. However, without a defined storyline or role, Keys remains on the sidelines.
The delay in integrating Keys into a prominent role is likely frustrating for both the wrestler and fans who were impressed by his initial showing. The Royal Rumble performance suggested a potential force in WWE, but the current lack of creative direction leaves his future with the company uncertain. Whether he will ultimately identify a place on the SmackDown roster, or another brand within WWE, depends on the development of a compelling narrative that utilizes his strengths.
As WrestleMania 42 approaches, the window for introducing Keys into a meaningful storyline is narrowing. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether WWE can capitalize on the momentum generated by his Royal Rumble appearance, or if he will remain a largely unseen asset.
