Russell Dominates Chinese GP Sprint Qualifying: Mercedes 1-2, Verstappen Struggles

Russell Dominates Chinese GP Sprint Qualifying: Mercedes 1-2, Verstappen Struggles

March 13, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Shanghai, China – George Russell continued his remarkable start to the 2026 Formula 1 season, securing pole position for the Chinese Grand Prix Sprint with a dominant performance in qualifying on Friday, March 13th. The Mercedes driver topped all segments, finishing 0.289 seconds ahead of teammate Kimi Antonelli, mirroring the pattern established at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

Russell’s time of 1:31.520s underscored Mercedes’ clear advantage in Shanghai, with world champion Lando Norris of McLaren managing to place third, a significant 0.621 seconds behind Russell. This gap highlights the substantial performance difference between the leading Mercedes cars and the rest of the field.

The qualifying session saw a strong showing from Ferrari, with Lewis Hamilton finishing fourth, a mere 0.02 seconds behind Norris. Oscar Piastri secured fifth for McLaren, followed closely by Charles Leclerc in the second Ferrari. The top six positions were therefore split between Mercedes, McLaren, and Ferrari, indicating a developing competitive dynamic early in the season.

However, the session was marked by a surprisingly difficult outing for Red Bull Racing. Max Verstappen, the four-time world champion, could only manage eighth place, a full 1.734 seconds off Russell’s pace. This performance represents a significant setback for the reigning champions, particularly after Verstappen’s struggles in Australia where he crashed during qualifying.

“The whole day has been a disaster pace-wise, no grip, no balance, just losing massive amounts of time in the corners and then because of that you start triggering other problems,” Verstappen stated, reflecting the team’s frustrations.

Further down the order, Oliver Bearman of Haas secured ninth, ahead of Isack Hadjar in the second Red Bull. The disparity in performance between the two Red Bull drivers is particularly noteworthy, with Hadjar trailing significantly behind Verstappen.

Russell’s pole position is his second in as many race weekends, following his victory in Australia. He attributed his success to improvements in the Mercedes engine’s performance. “The car has been really great all day and the engine is performing more normal compared to Melbourne when you had these big de-rates (when the engine switches to energy-recovery mode) and it was a bit challenging to drive,” Russell explained. “The focus since Melbourne has been about improving the starts.”

Norris expressed satisfaction with McLaren’s progress, stating, “I’m happy with the result. P3 is as good as we can do for the time being. Pretty happy to beat both Ferraris. A good lap and puts me in a good position for tomorrow.” McLaren’s improvement from qualifying fifth and sixth in Australia demonstrates a positive trajectory for the team.

Lewis Hamilton, despite his fourth-place finish, acknowledged Ferrari’s power deficit. “We are losing a lot of time on the straights, we have a lot of work to do to improve on power,” Hamilton said. “Mercedes have done a fantastic job and we have to step up and push to close the gap. Car-wise the car feels great and we can compete in the corners but when you’re down on power it is the way it is.” He also noted a spin during practice made for a “tricky session.”

The performance gap between qualifying and race conditions was also highlighted by Leclerc, who noted losing 0.5 seconds on the back straight during his final run. “In qualifying for some reason the Mercedes power-unit finds a lot of lap time,” he said, “but in the race we are much closer.” This observation suggests that Ferrari may be more competitive in the longer race format, where strategic considerations and tire management approach into play.

The Sprint Qualifying results reveal a clear power advantage for Mercedes, particularly in straight-line speed. This advantage was less pronounced in Australia, where Leclerc’s strong start propelled him into the lead. The Shanghai International Circuit’s long straights appear to favor the Mercedes engine configuration.

The Chinese Grand Prix Sprint race, scheduled for Saturday, March 14th, will provide a crucial test of these early-season form indicators. The full qualifying session for the main Grand Prix is set for Saturday as well, offering teams another opportunity to refine their setups and challenge for optimal grid positions. The Red Bull team will be under pressure to address the significant performance issues that plagued them throughout Friday’s sessions, while Mercedes will aim to capitalize on their apparent advantage and maintain their strong start to the 2026 season.

Kimi Antonelli’s qualifying performance also marks a promising debut for the young Italian driver, demonstrating his ability to quickly adapt to the demands of Formula 1 and challenge his experienced teammate. The battle between Russell and Antonelli will undoubtedly be a key storyline to watch throughout the season.
