Russia’s First Wave Pools: Surfing’s New Hope in the Motherland | Surfer.com

Russian Wave Pool Ambitions Rise as Olympic Surfing Landscape Shifts

The pursuit of artificial waves is gaining momentum globally, and Russia has emerged as a novel player in the burgeoning wave pool industry. With two facilities already operational – one in Rostov Oblast and another in Leningrad Oblast – Vertigo Sports is aiming to cultivate a domestic surfing scene and potentially contribute to the country’s future Olympic aspirations.

Vertigo Sports, initially a wakeboard park company, has successfully transitioned into wave pool manufacturing. The company’s pools, the first opening in 2024 and the second in 2025, are designed to provide consistent, high-quality waves for surfers of all levels. More Volnuetsa, the first pool, boasts an 85-meter (278-foot) wave breaking to the right, reaching heights of 1.5 meters (4.9 feet). Water and Surf, the second facility, offers a left-breaking wave in a larger 120-meter (393-foot) pool, with waves up to 1.7 meters (5.5 feet).

The technology behind these pools relies on “pneumatic chamber-caissons,” as explained by Pavel Churin to WavePoolMag. This system, unlike those utilizing mechanical levers, positions chambers above the water surface, connected to the pool through submerged intake openings. This innovative approach aims to deliver a more natural and reliable wave experience.

The timing of this development coincides with surfing’s inclusion as an Olympic sport in 2020, and Vertigo Sports explicitly links its efforts to the potential for Russian athletes to compete on the world’s biggest stage. “Artificial waves open revolutionary opportunities for the development of surfing in Russia and countries without access to the ocean,” the company states on its website. “This represents a key technology for creating a regular training process for athletes.”

However, Russia’s path to Olympic surfing participation is currently obstructed by a ban imposed by the International Surfing Association (ISA) in response to the conflict in Ukraine. The ISA’s sanctions, aligned with recommendations from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), prevent Russian athletes and officials from participating in ISA events “until further notice.” This ban casts a shadow over the immediate prospects of Russian surfers competing in the Olympics, despite the availability of domestic training facilities.

The recent changes to the Olympic surfing qualification pathway, as reported by Surfer.com, further complicate the landscape. The ISA has shifted the qualification process, reducing the emphasis on the World Surf League’s Championship Tour and increasing the importance of the ISA World Surfing Games. While this change was met with criticism from some within the surfing community, it highlights the ISA’s growing influence over Olympic team selection.

For a nation lacking extensive natural surf breaks, wave pools represent a potentially transformative solution. The ability to consistently generate waves allows for dedicated training, skill development, and the fostering of a competitive surfing culture. Vertigo Sports’ investment in this technology demonstrates a long-term commitment to establishing Russia as a viable force in the world of surfing.

Vertigo Sports’ broader expertise extends beyond wave pools. The company has over 14 years of experience in building watersports facilities, having completed more than 200 wake parks across 15 countries. They offer a comprehensive range of equipment, including cableways, obstacles, and infrastructure for wake parks and water skiing stadiums, all manufactured in their own facility with a three-year warranty.

The company’s portfolio includes notable projects such as Dobry Wake Park, the first full-size wake park in Russia on an artificial reservoir; Damba, a full-size wake park in Chelyabinsk featuring a five-tower circular system; and Aistovo, an entertainment and family recreation park in Kaliningrad combining a wake park with glamping and camping facilities.

While the current geopolitical climate presents significant challenges, the emergence of wave pool technology in Russia signifies a determined effort to overcome geographical limitations and cultivate a surfing community. Whether Russian surfers will be able to compete on the Olympic stage remains uncertain, but the foundation for future success is being laid with each generated wave.
