Schulting Wins Dutch Sprint Title & World Championship Spot | Prins Disappointed

March 2, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Heerenveen, Netherlands – Monday, March 2, 2026 – Suzanne Schulting and Janno Botman have been crowned Dutch sprint champions, securing their places at the upcoming World Championships. The victories came during the second day of the Daikin NK sprint competition, with both skaters demonstrating dominance in their respective fields.

Schulting, already holding a significant lead from the first day, defended her advantage with a commanding performance. She and Marrit Fledderus both clocked a time of 37.67 seconds on the second 500-meter race, but Schulting was awarded the faster time by a mere thousandth of a second. This maintained her approximately 0.6-point lead, giving her a 1.2-second cushion heading into the final 1,000-meter race.

Schulting further extended her lead in the 1,000-meter race, finishing a full second ahead of Fledderus. Pien Smit secured the third spot on the podium, her fourth-place finish in the 1,000 meters proving sufficient to claim the final qualifying position. The result marks Schulting’s first Dutch sprint championship title.

“I feel liberated,” Schulting stated, according to NU.nl. “The stress I had, no one can endure that.” The win is particularly significant for Schulting after a challenging season.

Alongside Schulting, Marrit Fledderus also qualified for the World Championships sprint, which will also be held in Heerenveen. Jutta Leerdam and Femke Kok had initially been designated to compete, but Leerdam previously announced she would be skipping the event, opening up two additional spots at the national championships.

In the men’s competition, Janno Botman secured the sole remaining World Championship ticket. He successfully fended off a late challenge from Tim Prins on the final 1,000-meter race. Jenning de Boo and Joep Wennemars had already qualified for the World Championships and did not participate in the NK sprint.

The men’s competition saw a dramatic finish, with Sebas Diniz withdrawing from the competition on Sunday morning due to illness, leaving the battle for qualification between Botman and Merijn Scheperkamp. However, it was Tim Prins who initially set the pace, posting a strong time of 1:07.80 in the penultimate heat.

Despite Prins’s impressive time, Botman ultimately prevailed, securing his place at the World Championships. Prins, however, acknowledged a disappointing outcome, describing his season as “a failed one.”

Botman’s victory is particularly noteworthy as he missed the opportunity to compete in the Olympic Games in Milan. This Dutch championship win provides him with a crucial opportunity to showcase his skills on the world stage.

The Dutch sprint championships served as a key qualifying event for the World Championships, highlighting the competitive depth within Dutch speed skating. With Schulting and Botman leading the charge, the Netherlands is poised to be a strong contender at the World Championships in Heerenveen next week.

Suzanne Schulting’s triumph is a testament to her resilience and determination, while Janno Botman’s victory offers a chance for redemption after missing out on the Olympics. The stage is now set for an exciting World Championships sprint competition, with Dutch skaters aiming to make their mark on the international stage.
