Scott McLeod: All Blacks Coach Joins Wallabies as Defence Coach

Scott McLeod: All Blacks Coach Joins Wallabies as Defence Coach

March 23, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

The Wallabies have made a significant move in bolstering their coaching staff, securing former All Blacks assistant coach Scott McLeod as their new defence coach. The appointment, announced on Monday, March 23, 2026, sees McLeod return to international rugby after a successful stint with New Zealand’s national team.

McLeod, 53, brings a wealth of experience to the Australian setup, having been a part of the All Blacks coaching team at the 2019 and 2023 Rugby World Cups, working under Steve Hansen and Ian Foster. He will join Les Kiss’s team ahead of the August 8 test match against Japan, marking Kiss’s first game as Wallabies head coach.

Interestingly, McLeod’s rugby journey began in Australia. Born in Brisbane, he was raised in New Zealand, where he represented the Chiefs in 44 Super 12 games and earned 10 test caps for the All Blacks as a centre. Following an eight-year playing career in Japan, he transitioned into coaching, holding positions with Waikato, the Chiefs and the Highlanders before joining the All Blacks in 2017.

His recent role was as an assistant coach with the Kubota Spears in Japan’s Rugby League One competition, keeping him actively involved in the sport at a high level. The move represents a coup for the Wallabies, particularly as McLeod has previously worked alongside current Wallabies mentor Joe Schmidt during his time with the All Blacks.

“I am very excited to return to international rugby, especially to join up with Les and the team to build on the foundations that have been place in place,” McLeod said in a statement. “There is a lot of excitement building within Rugby Australia and I am really committed to doing my part. I am looking forward to connecting with RA, the players and everyone who is invested in this team.”

The appointment also signals a shift within the Wallabies’ coaching structure. Current assistant Laurie Fisher, who rejoined the team in 2024 under Schmidt, will transition into a consultancy role. This move is designed to ensure continuity within the Australian men’s high-performance system, leveraging Fisher’s experience while bringing in McLeod’s specialized defensive expertise.

Rugby Australia director of high performance, Peter Horne, highlighted McLeod’s impressive credentials. “Scott has a great understanding of the environment and standards Joe Schmidt has driven since joining the Wallabies, having coached alongside him with the All Blacks, and will provide great support to Les as he transitions into the head coach position.”

The timing of this appointment is particularly noteworthy. With the next Rugby World Cup scheduled to accept place in Australia next year, McLeod’s intimate knowledge of the All Blacks’ strategies and personnel will be invaluable as the Wallabies prepare to face their trans-Tasman rivals in the pool stages for the first time. The prospect of McLeod helping to plot New Zealand’s downfall on home soil adds an extra layer of intrigue to the upcoming tournament.

McLeod’s defensive acumen is highly regarded within rugby circles. His track record with the All Blacks demonstrates his ability to implement effective defensive systems and prepare teams for the challenges posed by world-class opponents. The Wallabies, who have historically struggled with defensive consistency, will be hoping that McLeod can instill a greater level of resilience and tactical awareness within the team.

The arrival of McLeod is part of a broader effort by Les Kiss to reshape the Wallabies’ coaching staff and build a team capable of challenging for top honors. Kiss, who took the reins as head coach, will be relying on McLeod and other key personnel to implement his vision and unlock the team’s full potential. The August 8 test against Japan will provide an early opportunity to assess the impact of these changes and gauge the Wallabies’ progress under new leadership.

The appointment of a former All Blacks assistant coach is a bold move by Rugby Australia, signaling their ambition to compete with the best in the world. McLeod’s experience, tactical knowledge, and understanding of the Australian rugby landscape craft him a valuable asset to the Wallabies as they prepare for a crucial period in their history. The coming months will be critical as McLeod integrates into the team and works to build a defensive foundation that can withstand the pressures of international competition.
