Shane Ackerman’s Insane Teahupo’o Wipeout & the Bodyboarding Charge

Shane Ackerman’s Insane Teahupo’o Wipeout & the Bodyboarding Charge

March 15, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Australian Bodyboarder Shane Ackerman Charges Massive Waves

Shane Ackerman, a construction worker from the south coast of Australia, has earned a reputation as one of the world’s preeminent “prone chargers” – a bodyboarder who fearlessly tackles some of the most dangerous and imposing waves on the planet. Even as often overshadowed by surfing, bodyboarding, and particularly Ackerman’s approach, demands a unique level of commitment and courage.

A recent resurfaced video, captured during filming for a Yeti-sponsored feature titled Astronaut in the Ocean, showcases a particularly harrowing wipeout at May 2, 2025’s Teahupo’o. The footage, which has circulated widely, depicts Ackerman successfully navigating over the ledge of the infamous Tahitian break, only to be completely engulfed and violently impacted by the wave’s immense power. The force of the wipeout was so significant that observers remarked on the sheer luck involved in avoiding a serious spinal injury.

Ackerman himself recently provided context to the wipeout, describing the moment as feeling “over-vert” and comparing the sensation to a previous experience with a large “tow bomb” wave. He explained, “Paddling in, I was so over-vert it felt like I was going to tumble down the face and wipeout. I’d only ever had that feeling once before on a ‘tow bomb’ out here, so that’s what I gauged the size of the wave off. Much to my surprise, I somehow got a scoop in, and as I sat up it felt like the whole ocean was closing in on me.”

The incident draws parallels to a similar wipeout experienced by legendary waterman Mike Stewart at the same location. Stewart, at the age of 62, also endured a brutal annihilation at Teahupo’o, highlighting the inherent risks and the enduring spirit of those who pursue these extreme challenges. The comparison underscores the shared dedication to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the world of wave riding, regardless of discipline or age.

Mick Fanning, a professional surfer, offered insight into the mindset that separates Ackerman and other dedicated bodyboarders from their surfing counterparts. In the Yeti film, Fanning noted, “The difference between Shane, and most surfers, is that when the scary one comes through, his eyes light up. They’re doing things most humans don’t even wanna get near.” This observation speaks to a fundamental difference in approach – a willingness to embrace the danger and actively seek out the most challenging conditions.

The historical relationship between surfing and bodyboarding has often been marked by a degree of tension. While both sports share a common foundation in wave riding, they have often existed as separate communities with differing perspectives. Ackerman and other bodyboarders like Stewart represent a willingness to charge waves previously considered the domain of surfers, challenging those established boundaries and earning respect through sheer audacity and skill.

The appeal of bodyboarding, particularly in heavy conditions, may lie in its inherent simplicity. Without the need to stand up on a board, bodyboarders can focus entirely on positioning and maneuvering within the wave’s energy. This streamlined approach allows for quicker reactions and a more direct connection to the power of the ocean, potentially enabling them to navigate steep drops and critical sections that might be more difficult for surfers.

Ackerman’s story is a testament to the dedication and courage of those who pursue extreme sports. Balancing a demanding trade as a construction worker with a passion for charging some of the world’s biggest waves, he embodies a spirit of resilience and a relentless pursuit of pushing personal limits. His wipeout at Teahupo’o, while frightening, serves as a reminder of the inherent risks involved and the unwavering commitment required to excel in this demanding discipline.

The full film featuring Ackerman, Astronaut in the Ocean, provides further insight into his life and approach to wave riding. It’s a compelling portrait of an athlete who consistently seeks out the most challenging conditions and embraces the inherent dangers with a unique blend of skill, courage, and unwavering determination.
