Siniakova Upsets Andreeva at Indian Wells, Reaches Quarterfinals

Siniakova Upsets Andreeva at Indian Wells, Reaches Quarterfinals

March 10, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Indian Wells, CA – Kateřina Siniaková pulled off a significant upset at the BNP Paribas Open on Monday, defeating defending champion Mirra Andreeva in a grueling three-set match. The Czech veteran overcame a slow start and a determined opponent, ultimately prevailing 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-3 to reach the fourth round.

The match was a compelling display of resilience from Siniaková, who faced a considerable challenge from the 18-year-aged Andreeva. Early betting odds heavily favored the Russian, with Siniaková considered a significant underdog, priced at over 5:1 to advance.

Andreeva initially appeared to justify that favoritism, seizing an early lead. However, Siniaková, ranked 44th in the world, battled back from a set down and navigated a tense second-set tiebreak. She saved two match points in the tiebreak before securing it 7-5, shifting the momentum decisively in her favor.

The deciding set saw Siniaková elevate her game, effectively neutralizing Andreeva’s power and capitalizing on opportunities. She successfully defended eight of the nine break points she faced throughout the set, while converting two of her own. This efficiency proved crucial in securing the victory.

The win marks Siniaková’s first victory over a top-ten opponent on a hard court since February 2024, when she defeated Coco Gauff in Doha. It as well represents her third consecutive three-set victory in the tournament, demonstrating her current physical and mental fortitude.

“I have no words,” Siniaková said in a post-match interview with Canal+ Sport. “After three and a half hours (against Fernandez) and then playing doubles, I knew it would be incredibly tough. I left absolutely everything out there, but I’m completely exhausted. There isn’t a part of my body that doesn’t hurt. I prayed so much to finish the match. The hours on the court are felt, but I was in a trance and it worked out.”

Andreeva, visibly frustrated throughout the match, struggled to maintain her composure. She engaged in heated exchanges with the chair umpire and her coach, Conchita Martínez, a former Wimbledon champion. At the conclusion of the match, Andreeva angrily threw her racket towards the net after Siniaková secured the final point.

Siniaková’s tactical approach, characterized by tight slices and intelligent court positioning, clearly disrupted Andreeva’s rhythm. “She’s a great player, but she’s under a lot of pressure,” Siniaková observed. “She has a target on her back, constantly having to defend great results.”

The victory comes at a demanding time for Siniaková, who is competing in both singles and doubles at Indian Wells. Despite the physical toll, she remains focused on her next challenge.

Siniaková will now face another top-ten opponent, Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, in the quarterfinal round. Svitolina is currently ranked ninth in the world. “I never give up and I’ll leave everything out there next time too,” Siniaková vowed.

This result is particularly notable as it marks the first time Andreeva has fallen to an opponent outside the WTA’s top 30 this season. The loss ends Andreeva’s hopes of defending her title at Indian Wells and adds another compelling narrative to a tournament already filled with surprises.

Meanwhile, fellow Czech player Karolina Muchova also advanced, dominating her opponent and securing a place in the quarterfinals. Muchova allowed her opponent only three games in a decisive victory, further highlighting the strength of Czech representation in the tournament.
