Stefanie Grob: Ski Success & Points Redemption Story

Stefanie Grob: Ski Success & Points Redemption Story

March 9, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

VAL DI FASSA, Italy – Stefanie Grob is experiencing a surge in form as the alpine ski season winds down, culminating in a career-best World Cup finish this weekend. The 21-year-old Swiss skier secured 18th place in the second downhill race on the “La Volata” piste in Val di Fassa, Italy, on Sunday, March 8, 2026.

This result builds on the momentum Grob gained after earning her first World Cup points in Soldeu, Andorra, just a week prior. Since that breakthrough in the Super-G, her results have steadily improved: 26th, 23rd, 23rd and now 18th. The Appenzell native demonstrated impressive consistency, narrowly missing an even higher placement in the first half of the race. She rebounded with strong sector times of 16 and 8 in the latter portion of the course.

The race was won by Italy’s Laura Pirovano, who continued her dominance in Val di Fassa, finishing just 0.01 seconds ahead of Cornelia Hütter of Austria and 0.05 seconds ahead of Corinne Suter of Switzerland. Grob’s performance was remarkably close to the top ten, finishing only 28 hundredths of a second behind Nicol Delago.

Grob’s ascent has been particularly noteworthy given recent challenges. Reports indicate she even faced equipment difficulties, competing in Soldeu with borrowed gear – a helmet and race suit that weren’t her own. Despite these hurdles, she secured those initial World Cup points, a moment she described as “a relief.”

“I have fought for this for a long time. It feels good,” Grob said, according to reports following her initial point-scoring run. She expressed optimism about the potential for continued improvement, stating, “Let’s see what this triggers.”

The “ketchup effect” – the idea that once one success is achieved, others will follow – appears to be taking hold. Grob, a two-time Junior World Champion in downhill, is clearly gaining confidence and translating that into tangible results on the World Cup circuit. Her performance in Val di Fassa underscores this trend.

In the second downhill race at Passo San Pellegrino, Grob also distinguished herself as the third-best Swiss skier, finishing behind Suter (3rd) and Jasmine Flury (12th). This further solidifies her position as a rising star within the Swiss team.

Looking ahead, Grob has another opportunity to build on her success in the Super-G race scheduled for Sunday, March 8, 2026. The consistent improvement in her results suggests she is a contender for a top-ten finish, and potentially even a podium spot, as the season progresses. The close margins at the top of the standings mean that even compact improvements in her performance could yield significant gains.

The Italian dominance in Val di Fassa continued with Pirovano’s victory, marking her second consecutive win on the “La Volata” course. She edged out Hütter by a mere 0.01 seconds, a testament to the incredibly competitive nature of World Cup downhill racing. Suter rounded out the podium, demonstrating the strength of the Swiss team.

Grob’s recent success is not just a personal triumph but also a positive sign for Swiss alpine skiing. Her emergence as a consistent point-scorer adds depth to the team and provides a glimpse of the future. With continued dedication and the momentum she has built, Stefanie Grob is poised to become a regular fixture among the world’s elite downhill skiers.
