Stephenville Dome Wins Kraft Hockeyville – Provincial Title | K Funding

Stephenville Dome Wins Kraft Hockeyville – Provincial Title | $50K Funding

March 15, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Stephenville, Newfoundland and Labrador, is one step closer to hosting an NHL pre-season game, having been named a provincial winner in the 2026 Kraft Hockeyville competition. The Stephenville Dome is now in contention for the grand prize, which includes $250,000 for arena upgrades and the coveted opportunity to welcome an NHL team for a pre-season contest.

The announcement, made earlier today, recognizes the Stephenville Dome’s commitment to the sport of ice hockey and the vital role it plays in the community. Kraft Hockeyville, a partnership between Kraft Heinz, the National Hockey League, and the NHL Players’ Association, provides funding for essential improvements to local arenas across Canada. This year’s program has expanded to include all 13 provinces and territories, nearly tripling the total prize pool and allowing more communities than ever to benefit from the initiative.

The Stephenville Dome, along with 12 other provincial and territorial winners, will now compete for the top two finalist spots. Each of the 13 winning communities has already received $50,000 for arena upgrades, a significant boost for facilities that often serve as the heart of Canadian towns, and cities. The finalists will be revealed next week, setting the stage for a final push to secure the grand prize.

Kraft Hockeyville’s evolution over its 20-year history reflects a growing recognition of the importance of grassroots hockey. What began in 2006 as a reality television series on CBC Television has transformed into a nationwide program that directly impacts the quality of hockey infrastructure in communities large and slight. Whereas initially broadcast as a full series, the contest now features segments during CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada broadcasts, maintaining a strong connection to the sport’s most iconic Canadian television program.

The program’s expansion to the United States in 2015, though concluded in 2020, demonstrated its potential for broader impact. However, the core focus remains on supporting Canadian communities and fostering a love for the game at the local level. The increased prize money and expanded regional representation in the 2026 contest underscore Kraft Heinz’s dedication to strengthening community hockey and celebrating the arenas where countless memories are made.

The competition isn’t simply about securing funding; it’s about showcasing the passion and dedication of hockey communities across the country. The Stephenville Dome’s success in reaching the provincial winner stage is a testament to the efforts of local volunteers, organizers, and hockey enthusiasts who work tirelessly to maintain and improve their facility. The Dome’s Facebook page shows a well-maintained facility, and a community clearly invested in its local rink.

Should Stephenville advance to become one of the two finalists, the community will have the opportunity to rally support and create a compelling case for why their arena deserves the grand prize. The prospect of hosting an NHL pre-season game is a significant draw, offering not only a thrilling experience for local fans but also a substantial economic boost for the region. However, Kraft Hockeyville acknowledges that some winning arenas may require additional upgrades to meet NHL standards, and in such cases, the pre-season game may be held at a nearby alternative site.

The origins of Kraft Hockeyville can be traced back to Capital C, a Canadian advertising agency founded by Tony Chapman. The initial concept and theme were developed by Chapman, with Fred Nicolaidis, Pamela McNair, Harry Doupe of the CBC, and Jack Hewitt of Kraft Canada playing key roles in bringing the contest to life. Their vision has created a legacy of community support and hockey enthusiasm that continues to thrive two decades later.

The announcement of the provincial and territorial winners included Taber, Alberta; Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia; Grandview, Manitoba; Sackville, New Brunswick; Fort Providence, Northwest Territories; Thorburn, Nova Scotia; Arviat, Nunavut; Blackstock, Ontario; Cornwall, Prince Edward Island; and Scott, Quebec, alongside Stephenville. Each of these communities represents a unique hockey story and a shared commitment to the sport.

As the competition progresses, the focus will shift to the final two communities, who will compete for the ultimate prize. For Stephenville, the journey has already been a success, securing vital funding for arena upgrades and bringing national attention to their local hockey program. But the dream of hosting an NHL pre-season game remains within reach, and the community will undoubtedly be mobilizing to support their rink in the final stages of the Kraft Hockeyville contest.
