Sweet Sixteen: Purdue, Arizona, Illinois & Houston Advance to Elite Eight – 2026 NCAA Tournament Updates
SAN JOSE & HOUSTON – Purdue and Arizona advanced to the Elite Eight on Thursday, securing their spots with last-second heroics and dominant offensive performances, respectively. Iowa and Illinois also punched their tickets to the next round, completing a compelling slate of Sweet Sixteen matchups.
Purdue Survives Texas Thriller
In a nail-biting contest in San Jose, Purdue edged out Texas 79-77 thanks to a game-winning tip-in by Trey Kaufman-Renn with just 0.7 seconds remaining. Kaufman-Renn finished with 20 points and 8 rebounds, proving to be the difference-maker for the Boilermakers. Fletcher Loyer added 18 points, while Braden Smith contributed 16.
The game featured nine ties and 15 lead changes, highlighting the back-and-forth nature of the competition. Despite being outshot from beyond the arc (11-of-25 for Texas, 4-of-20 for Purdue), the Boilermakers capitalized on their free throw shooting (15-of-20) and second-chance opportunities (22 second-chance points) to secure the victory. Tramon Mark led Texas with 29 points in a valiant effort.
Purdue’s win marks their seventh appearance in the Elite Eight in program history and their second in the last three tournaments. They previously reached the National Championship game in 2024, falling to UConn.
Arizona Overwhelms Arkansas
Arizona showcased a dominant offensive display, defeating Arkansas 109-88 in Houston. Six players scored in double figures for the Wildcats, led by Brayden Burries’ 23 points on an efficient 7-of-11 shooting. Koa Peat added 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting, expressing his enjoyment of the team dynamic, stating, “I’m having the most fun in my life… I love these guys.”
The Wildcats shot a remarkable 64% from the field and were nearly perfect from the free throw line (15-of-17). Their balanced scoring attack and efficient shooting proved too much for the Razorbacks to handle. Arizona’s performance was lauded by Charles Barkley, who commented, “They are complete. They play inside-out. They don’t take bad shots. You can’t run up and down the court with them.”
Darius Acuff Jr. Led Arkansas with 28 points. Arizona’s victory sends them to the Elite Eight for the 12th time in program history and the first under head coach Tommy Lloyd. They last reached this stage in 2015.
Illinois Controls Houston
Illinois secured a 65-55 victory over Houston, holding the Cougars to just 34% shooting from the field. David Mirkovic, Keaton Wagler and Andrej Stojakovic each contributed 13-14 points, respectively, leading the Fighting Illini’s balanced attack. Illinois managed to control the game despite Houston taking 13 more shots.
Illinois advanced to the Elite Eight for the 11th time in school history, and the second time in the last three tournaments. They fell to UConn in their last Elite Eight appearance in 2024. The program has a rich tournament history, including runs to the Final Four in 2005, and 2001.
Iowa Edges Nebraska in Tight Contest
Iowa defeated Nebraska 77-71 in a closely contested game. Bennett Stirtz led the Hawkeyes with 20 points, while Alvaro Folgueiras contributed 16 off the bench. Pryce Sandfort paced Nebraska with 25 points.
Iowa’s victory came down to efficient shooting, connecting on 52% of their field goals and 43% of their three-point attempts. They overcame a rebounding disadvantage (52-43) to secure the win. The Hawkeyes and Cornhuskers had previously split their season series 1-1, with both games decided by narrow margins.
Looking Ahead
The Sweet Sixteen concluded with a series of thrilling contests, setting the stage for a highly anticipated Elite Eight. Purdue, Arizona, Iowa, and Illinois will now look to continue their tournament journeys and compete for a spot in the Final Four.
