The Americans, favored to win Pool B and ultimately the entire tournament, secured a decisive victory, though the focus remained on managing workloads and navigating the complexities of balancing MLB team priorities with international competition.

Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, arguably the best left-handed pitcher in baseball and a two-time American League Cy Young Award winner, is slated to build just one start in the WBC. This arrangement, confirmed by Skubal himself, was a condition of his participation, allowing him to return to the Tigers’ spring training schedule without disrupting his preparation for the upcoming MLB season. He’ll take the mound for his single WBC appearance next week, after which he’ll rejoin Detroit.

Manager Mark DeRosa opted to start San Francisco Giants righty Logan Webb in the opener, despite possessing the formidable pitching duo of Skubal and Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Paul Skenes, the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner. Webb, who has looked sharp in Cactus League play with seven strikeouts and a 1.80 ERA over five innings, represents a strategic choice to ease into the tournament and manage pitching depth. DeRosa acknowledged the need to balance player availability with the demands of the WBC and the concerns of MLB teams regarding potential injury risks.

The cautious approach to pitching stems from recent experiences, notably the injury sustained by then-New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz during the 2023 WBC while celebrating a Puerto Rico victory. DeRosa emphasized the “guardrails” in place for the tournament, including strict pitch count limits, and the need to accommodate pitchers’ MLB teams’ schedules as they prepare for Opening Day. Skubal and Skenes, however, have indicated their willingness to remain with Team USA throughout the tournament, suggesting they may receive additional starts if the team advances.

Offensively, Team USA boasts a lineup loaded with All-Star talent. Returning players from the 2023 squad include Bobby Witt Jr., Kyle Schwarber, Paul Goldschmidt, and Will Smith. The projected lineup features a potent mix of power and speed, with Bryce Harper, Aaron Judge, Alex Bregman, Cal Raleigh, Roman Anthony, and Byron Buxton joining the core group. Judge, a three-time AL MVP, is the +800 favorite to be named MVP of the 2026 WBC.

The team’s offensive firepower is a key reason why the United States is a heavy -800 favorite to win Pool B, which also includes Mexico, Italy, Great Britain, and Brazil. The United States won its only WBC title in 2017, defeating Puerto Rico in the final. However, the Dominican Republic, with a lineup featuring Vladimir Guerrero Jr. And Juan Soto, presents a strong challenge, currently holding the second-best odds at +400.

Brazil, making its second WBC appearance after competing in 2013, entered the tournament as a significant underdog. The team earned its spot in the 2026 Classic by winning a qualifying tournament in March 2025, defeating Germany in a dramatic final. Unlike the American roster, Brazil’s team does not feature any current MLB players. The roster includes the sons of former MLB players Dante Bichette Jr. (brother of Bo Bichette), Joseph Contreras (son of José Contreras), and Lucas Ramirez (son of Manny Ramirez).

Despite the lack of MLB experience, Brazil displayed resilience in its qualifying run and aims to compete despite the odds. The team’s most experienced hitter, Leonardo Reginatto, a veteran of the Mexican League, provides a veteran presence. The youngest player in the tournament, 17-year-traditional right-handed pitcher Eric Contreras, is a promising prospect committed to Vanderbilt University.
