Texas Women’s Golf Leads Darius Rucker Intercollegiate After Record Round | Farah O’Keefe Ties Program Record
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The No. 9 University of Texas Women’s Golf team surged to the top of the leaderboard Monday, carding a 5-under par 279 in the opening round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at Long Cove Club. The Longhorns lead the field by eight strokes, showcasing a dominant performance that sets the stage for a compelling tournament.
Leading the charge for Texas was junior Farah O’Keefe, who delivered a historic round of 7-under par 64. This score not only tied the program record for the lowest 18-hole score but also matched the tournament course record, immediately establishing O’Keefe as the player to watch.
Texas stood as the only team to finish the first round under par, a testament to the team’s consistent play and strategic approach. Florida State occupies second place, trailing the Longhorns by a significant margin.
The Longhorns’ impressive team score was built on contributions from across the lineup. In addition to O’Keefe’s stellar performance, junior Lauren Kim fired a 3-under par 68, placing her in contention for the individual title. Junior Selina Liao contributed a 1-over par 72, although senior Cindy Hsu carded a 4-over par 75. The team’s scoring was rounded out by senior Angela Heo, who posted a 6-over par 77.
O’Keefe currently holds sole possession of first place on the individual leaderboard, while Kim is closely behind in second. The Longhorns collectively totaled 17 birdies in the opening round, with O’Keefe accounting for seven and Kim registering five, demonstrating their aggressive and accurate play.
O’Keefe’s remarkable round was highlighted by a string of birdies, beginning on the first, third, and fifth holes on the front nine. She continued her momentum on the back nine, adding birdies on the 10th, 11th, 14th, and 18th holes. Her ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities proved crucial to her record-tying performance.
Kim’s 3-under par 68 was equally impressive, fueled by five birdies. Her consistent play and ability to navigate the challenging course conditions contributed significantly to the team’s overall success.
The Longhorns will resume their campaign at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate on Tuesday at 10:10 a.m. CT, teeing off from the 10th hole. They will look to build on their strong start and maintain their lead as they navigate the remaining two rounds of the tournament.
This strong showing at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate comes on the heels of a successful start to the spring season for the Longhorns. Earlier this year, O’Keefe earned medalist honors at the Therese Hession Regional Challenge, where the team finished as runner-up. O’Keefe’s victory at that event, secured with a clutch chip shot in a playoff, underscored her ability to perform under pressure.
O’Keefe’s accomplishments extend beyond collegiate golf. She recently earned a gold medal as part of Team USA at the World Amateur Team Championships in Singapore, finishing tied for 11th individually. She competed alongside Megha Ganne (Stanford) and Catherine Park (USC), both of whom are also participating in the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate.
The Longhorns’ roster also includes players with international experience. Lauren Kim represented Canada, Vivian Lu competed for Modern Zealand, and Cindy Hsu and Selina Liao played for Taiwan at various international events. This diverse representation highlights the global reach and talent within the Texas Women’s Golf program.
Both O’Keefe and Hsu were also named to the ANNIKA Award Final Fall Watch List, recognizing their outstanding performances during the fall tournament season. O’Keefe consistently finished in the top 10 in each of the Longhorns’ four fall tournaments, including three top-5 finishes, solidifying her status as one of the nation’s top collegiate golfers.
The Darius Rucker Intercollegiate features a highly competitive field, including No. 14 Vanderbilt, No. 6 Wake Forest, No. 20 Northwestern, No. 21 Arizona State, No. 18 South Carolina, No. 8 Arkansas, No. 23 Arizona, No. 5 Auburn, No. 12 Duke, and Alabama. The Longhorns’ strong performance on Monday demonstrates their ability to compete with the nation’s elite programs.
Looking ahead, O’Keefe, Kim, and Hsu have all received invitations to compete in the prestigious Augusta National Women’s Amateur, further showcasing the program’s rising stars and their potential for future success. The event is scheduled to seize place from April 2-5.
