Tirreno-Adriatico: Van der Poel Attacks, Van Aert Eyes Stage Battles & Vingegaard Style

Tirreno-Adriatico: Van der Poel Attacks, Van Aert Eyes Stage Battles & Vingegaard Style

March 13, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Tirreno-Adriatico is already delivering on its promise of early-season fireworks, with a compelling battle unfolding across the Italian coastline. Reigning Paris-Roubaix and Milan-San Remo champion Mathieu van der Poel launched an early attack on Friday, but was quickly reeled in by a determined peloton, according to reports from Sporza and HLN. The aggressive move came during the race’s opening stages, signaling van der Poel’s intent to be a major contender throughout the week-long competition.

While van der Poel’s initial foray was neutralized, the aggressive racing continued, resulting in a breakaway group forming that included Julian Alaphilippe and Edward Planckaert. This group was ultimately granted permission to move ahead by the main field, setting the stage for a potentially dynamic finish. The early aggression underscores the high level of competition already on display at Tirreno-Adriatico, with riders eager to test their form and gain an advantage.

The presence of van der Poel, Wout van Aert and Alaphilippe – three of the sport’s biggest stars – adds significant weight to this year’s edition of Tirreno-Adriatico. As idlprocycling.com points out, this marks a return to the race for these riders five years after a particularly memorable 2021 edition, also featuring Tadej Pogačar. While replicating the spectacle of 2021 may be a tall order, the anticipation is palpable.

Van Aert, who has raced Omloop Nieuwsblad six times previously, including a victory in 2022, is also using Tirreno-Adriatico as a key part of his spring campaign. He’s slated to compete in Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Le Samyn alongside teammate Christophe Laporte, who will participate in all three early-season classics – Omloop, Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne, and Le Samyn. Matthew Brennan will also feature in Omloop and Kuurne, according to team announcements.

Van der Poel’s program for the spring classics is remarkably similar to his successful 2023 schedule. He will build towards Milan-San Remo with a preparatory block at Tirreno-Adriatico, followed by the E3 Saxo Classic, the renamed In Flanders Fields (formerly Middelkerke-Wevelgem), the Tour of Flanders, and culminating in Paris-Roubaix. The Alpecin-Premier Tech team confirmed that van der Poel waited to complete his initial training block before committing to his road return, indicating a deliberate and measured approach to his season preparation.

The competition isn’t limited to just these headline names. Nieuwsblad reports that Wout van Aert anticipates a fierce battle between the general classification contenders, describing the race as a “little Liège-Bastogne-Liège” – a reference to the notoriously challenging Ardennes classic. This suggests a course profile that will favor strong climbers and tactical riders, potentially setting the stage for significant time gaps.

Beyond the racing, there’s been some lighthearted attention surrounding Jonas Vingegaard’s choice of bib shorts and Tadej Pogačar’s course reconnaissance. Nieuwsblad noted van Aert’s comment that Vingegaard “simply doesn’t care how he looks,” a playful observation about the Danish rider’s focus on performance over presentation. Pogačar’s pre-race course inspection also drew attention, highlighting the meticulous preparation undertaken by the top contenders.

Van der Poel himself has made it clear he intends to be aggressive, stating, according to WielerFlits, “I’m definitely not going to hold back” in the upcoming punchy stages. This declaration reinforces his reputation as a dynamic and unpredictable racer, capable of launching surprise attacks and disrupting the established order.

The early stages of Tirreno-Adriatico have already demonstrated a willingness to race aggressively, and the presence of multiple world-class riders ensures a captivating spectacle for cycling fans. The race is shaping up to be a crucial proving ground for contenders aiming for success in the upcoming spring classics, and a compelling narrative is already unfolding along the Italian coast. The return of van der Poel, van Aert, and Alaphilippe to the race, five years after their memorable 2021 battle alongside Pogačar, adds a layer of intrigue and anticipation to this year’s edition.

As the race progresses, the focus will undoubtedly shift towards the general classification battle, but the early aggression suggests that riders are not content to simply mark each other. The challenging course profile, combined with the high level of competition, promises a thrilling week of racing, with potential for unexpected twists, and turns. The coming days will reveal which riders are best prepared to handle the demands of Tirreno-Adriatico and lay the foundation for a successful spring campaign.
