TSC SPIN 100: New Index Tracks Public Markets’ View of Global Sport Investment

TSC SPIN 100: New Index Tracks Public Markets’ View of Global Sport Investment

March 3, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

The business of sport is increasingly viewed as a legitimate and attractive asset class, but analyzing its value has traditionally focused on private markets – franchise valuations, league rights deals and venture capital investments. A new index, the TSC SPIN 100, aims to provide a more comprehensive and transparent view by focusing on public markets and tracking 100 publicly listed companies with significant exposure to the global sports economy.

Developed by The Sports Consultancy, the SPIN 100 index isn’t simply about teams, and leagues. It encompasses the wider commercial ecosystem, including apparel, media, betting, infrastructure, technology, and related services. The index seeks to address a gap in the market by organizing data in a way that allows for the tracking of sport as a coherent global system, offering real-time signals on growth expectations, risk, and valuation.

What is the TSC SPIN 100?

The index comprises companies across more than 15 countries and 14 industry segments. It includes both “pure-play” sports businesses and diversified corporations where sport represents a substantial revenue stream. The selection process wasn’t arbitrary. To qualify, companies needed to meet a minimum market capitalization of US$300 million and generate at least US$50 million in revenue.

However, simply meeting those financial thresholds wasn’t enough. The methodology employs a two-tier exposure framework. Companies deriving more than 70 percent of their revenue from sport receive full weighting in the index. Those with between 30 and 70 percent exposure receive an adjusted weighting of 0.75x. Companies with less than 30 percent revenue linked to sport were excluded, ensuring that the index truly reflects businesses deeply embedded in the sports economy.

The final weighting of index constituents is based on market capitalization, adjusted for sport exposure, and then normalized to 100 percent, creating a live index value accessible through an interactive dashboard.

Early Insights from the Data

Even in its early stages, the TSC SPIN 100 is revealing some key trends. One notable observation is the global, yet uneven, distribution of public market investment in sport. North America currently accounts for roughly 37 percent of the index, while the Asia-Pacific region represents 41 percent, and Europe 17 percent. This suggests a structural diversification of investment across geographies.

Performance also varies significantly by segment. Over the past five years, technology and digital innovation have been among the strongest performing categories, while data, analytics, and intelligence have shown more volatility. Infrastructure, venues, and operations have delivered solid medium-term returns. Conversely, sports media and broadcast have faced sustained pressure, a trend visible directly within the tool’s dashboard.

The index also highlights the importance of considering different time horizons. Some segments demonstrate strong three-year performance but weaker short-term momentum, while others have rebounded recently after periods of decline. This allows users to observe how investor priorities evolve over time – year-to-date, one year, three years, and five years – rather than relying on a single snapshot.

Value for Investors and Rights Holders

The SPIN 100 offers several benefits for investors. It provides a benchmark for sport-linked public equities, a means to test sector narratives against actual market behavior, and a tool to monitor segment rotation and valuation trends. For rights holders and sports organizations, the index offers insight into how public markets perceive different commercial models, a reference point for discussions about growth, margins, and risk, and greater transparency across the broader sports economy.

The index isn’t intended as a standalone investment tool, but rather as a dynamic intelligence platform. It will be continuously updated with regular thematic analysis exploring segment movements, regional trends, and emerging patterns within the sports economy. The Sports Consultancy plans to publish further insights drawn directly from the index in partnership with SportsPro, using the SPIN 100 as a structured reference point for evaluating the value of sport in capital markets.

The creators emphasize that the TSC SPIN 100 is designed for tracking and analysis purposes only and does not constitute investment advice. As sport continues to mature as an asset class, tools like this are becoming increasingly vital for bringing clarity and consistency to the evaluation of its economic potential.
